Knives at Wally World

Home Depot also ‘forces’ pricing on their vendors, I am SURE WW does the same.
I saw this shit first hand with American Standard.

Well they sell the USA made Buck 110 in a Nylon sheath for $27. I don't think they "force" buck to do anything. I recently bought a Spyderco Tenacious (China made) for $37 and a Resilience (China made) for $47, they are awesome, and quality is top notch.

theres a former walmart purchaser, now works for walmarts other company samsclub buying some of the knives they stock and sell online, who participates here on the buck forum sometimes. sure hes beating the makers down to the last dime as thats his job, but seriously doubt its asking for inferior make and products.

That is his job and I suspect if he isn't performing, Sams Club or WM would replace him. That is the nature of the business and I don't have a problem with that. The knife company chooses to deliver knives at a certain price point. We know that WM does pressure vendors for lower prices, but there are some products that they seem to simply ride along with the price increases. Coke is an example. I suspect a customer would think something is missing in the grocery area if WM didn't carry Coke products and that could drive business elsewhere. I view Rubbermaid (RM) products the same way even though WM only carries some RM product now unlike years past. Frankly if I want something "better" (and I do think RM containers are better), I buy elsewhere... Lowe's or Home Depot.

yeah i wasnt really commenting on walmart business model. some folks like it some dont. more so on there is a buyer here who participates and hes buying legit products from knife makers. not asking for seconds or reduced quality and trying to trick end customers.........only doing his job of getting the best deal that can be got. sometimes even a special run like the buck mesa.

Last time I was at Wal-Mart, I checked out their knife selection (just to check; not to buy), and among the knives, saw:

Case large yellow trapper (SS blades)
Spyderco Tenacious
Numerous Kershaws (mostly China-made, but some USA, too)
Buck 110 as well as some China-made traditionals
A SOG knife (don't remember which model)
Victorinox Classic
Probably some Winchesters, too.

Not sure if I saw any CRKTs, Gerber, etc. My mind usually blanks out on Gerbers, because they are so ubiquitous everywhere. I was mostly focused on the fact they had a Spyderco (even one made in China), and was surprised at the Case trapper. Of course, all the knives were in a locked glass case, and all were in clamshell packaging. IIRC, the Tenacious was around $45 or so. IMO, that's probably the upper end for a knife at Wal-Mart. Much higher than that will be very difficult to move the product. The vast majority of people, including Wal-Mart shoppers, are not knife aficionados.

It wouldn't make any sense for the real name-brand knife companies to purposely deliver inferior products to WM to match WM's target customers. That would give the companies a bad name, and would not be worth having their products stocked at WM.

This thread prompted a trip to my local Walmart. They had a nice selection. Some good Spyderco's, Buck's and Kershaw. I picked up a Leek 1660 with the black blade and grey case.

I just happened to notice thru a Google search that KMart sells knives as well. Spydercos at least....

I was at WM today and checked the knife area; Vic Classic, Bucks, Schrades, some Kershaws, one SOG, and Gerbers are the ones I remember seeing.

At the walmarts around me they always have some Gerber, Camillus, a few SOG's ( almost always the seal pup ), always the OKC jet pilots, some CRKT, sometimes a Chinese spyderco or two, always the Vic classic and one other model, a few Kershaw models, Leatherman, BUCK , recently the case yellow trapper, then your cheapo stuff like Winchester, Remington, mossy oak, Ozark trail, and Sheffield.
It's normally a decent enough selection, California may be crazy with gun laws but are pretty good as far as knives are concerned and were surrounded by farms , orchards, and fields where people hunt fowl, they make sure to keep an acceptable stock of knives.

I picked up a Kershaw Freefall at Wally for just $17. It used 5cr13mov steel instead of 8cr13mov. Several other Kershaws' were also sold with cheaper steel blades than normal. Just goes to show you that Kershaw is about making knives for the masses. Like one of the BF members said, "Kershaw is the new Gerber."
