Knives at work

I have. At a former employer, I once managed a disgruntled employee who was on probation and who was about out the door due to absences, etc. He tried to convince my superiors that he felt threatened by me since I carried a pocket knife clipped in my pocket (small Seb).

In this situation, my superiors knew that this employee was problematic at best, yet made him feel "heard," consulted me about it, and let things go with uncomfortable silence for close to 15 days until he decided to quit.

Never once was there an issue made over the pocket knife in that office environment. It was clear to all that he was simply trying to stir the pot and muddy the waters.

Hang in there. If your company values you, you'll be just fine.

I was reported to the accounting department VP once for carrying a Victorinox-made German army slipjoint pocketknife with a 2.5" blade and the usual very-handy Vic accessories. After experiencing a double-feed in the office photocopy machine, I was able to slip the thin blade into the jammed papers and clear it. Unfortunately, one of our well-known troublemakers was standing behind me and she asked me why I was carrying a knife at work. I responded that it is a tool and a good one at that. Her next stop was the VP's office. The guy was really cool about it, because he once borrowed that same knife to open a package. He sent Ms. Troublemaker on her way and told her to concentrate on her own work and mind her own business.
