Knives banned on the job

My bro-in-law is a chemical engineer at Dow. He can't carry a knife, but he can turn a couple of valves and blow up half of Michigan. Its crazy, but its the result of emotion supplanting reason.

I'm all for the right to carry a knife, but the bottom line is, your employer has the right to keep you from doing so while on their property and on the clock. Thankfully my company only limits knife carry to 3" blades or less. Personally I like bigger knives, but hey, at least I can carry *something*. I don't know about y'all, but I can't afford to look for another job cuz I want to carry a knife. Not in these times, at least...

dude i had the same problem a while back. i was told i could carry a leatherman wave, but not a phat bob. anyone who owns both knows the wave has 2 blades, a "scarier" blade shape, and has a bunch of other pointy things as well. I still carry, inside my waistband. i aint gonna be caught without a blade when the fit hits the shan. but now its a bk11. thin, small, concealable. havent had a problem and its been a year since i was told to not carry for "safety reasons"

btw, i work outdoors, away from prying eyes, and use my knife hard. my above post wasnt advice but an insight into what i do. I know i can get away with it since one person saw my knife and was worried, now im more cautious, and thats all. if you work in fornt of a lot of eyes, id say leave it in your car. job market blows

Time to join kniferights.org

It seems like there is something much deeper involved at work. I am in the same boat, luckily my boss keeps his nose in his computer 10 hours per day.

USA has the highest number of lawyers per capita in the world, and it shows. It's far cheaper to ban knives at work than to defend from a lawsuit. If a drunk can sue the restaurant that served him for letting him drive, then it's conceivable for an employee to sue his employer for letting him carry his own knife and cut himself.

Get use to it. We are witnessing an extortion shakedown racket played by our insurers. Comply with their silly mandate or pay higher preminums; of course no matter what you do, there will always be new mandates to justify ever greater premiums. Imagine from an emplyer's prospetive how hard it would be to control pocket knives; yet when someone cuts themselves opening a box, that becomes a new justification for another premium hike. There is only one way to end this and that is to outlaw liability insurance and force everyone to own their own legal defense. I guarantee you that the minute this happens legal claims will drop to 10% of what they are now and most lawyers will be learning how to dig ditches. As it stands now about 33% of the claims brought against my company have nothing to do with us at all (like slips and falls on someone else's property), but our insurer's settle anyway, because it is cheaper then going through litigation. Whether you are an employee, manager or employer we are all living in a world that has become increasingly detached from reality.

Thankfully I can carry anything I want at both jobs and even if I could not , I would carry it anyway. I choose not to let decisions made by the mamby-pamby minded affect my wants and needs. :)

When you work for a large business entity you often are supposed to follow rules which make little or no sense, and that includes castrating your knife.

Who was the Einstein that though up the idea of being safer if you leave it in your car ? Easy target IMHO. Plus, if a company can dictate to you about "pocket knives & weapons", then they are supersedeing state law, which is not legal-is it ? A knife is a TOOL in the hands of a responsible person. It only becomes a WEAPON in the hands of a criminal, who is using it for committing a crime. Defending yourself is NOT a crime IMHO. There are plenty of people in prison for killing someone with a hammer.

You don't have to like it, but you're on your employers quarter you dance to his rules. When you win the lotto or start your own company you can carry whatever you want. It's tough enough to find a job in a down economy, but it's even tougher when you've been fired from your last job for violating company rules. You will end up flipping burgers.

With knife nuts making up less than 1% of society at large, get used to the fact that the rest of the herd does not look at knives the same way we do. These rules have come about because some moron abused his right, and ruined it for many. I used to be a machinist before I retired. We had some young idiot cut off his right index finger by abusing a Buck 110 on the job. He was confident in the lock on the blade in spite of the older guys telling him to knock it off. Within a week, Human Resourses came down with a no knives policy. We could only used the stock box cutter from the supply room afterward.

Keep flashing those waved folders in public, and we'll be like England yet. An idiot few ruining it for the many.

Carl.

Metal detectors at the site? Get wanded on your way in? If not, then its a moot point. Ask yourself what would you do, if your supervisor asked you to empty your pockets. Otherwise, your pocket is your business. I don't buy into the whole 'its their property, they make the rules' bit, my personal effects are my business wherever I happen to be.

Good post.

In these days and times we have to do what we are told by our employers.

Jobs aren't exactly easy to find and those are the PT jobs, finding one that really pays well these days...... Good luck with that....

Bottom line is they are in the drivers seat and they know it so if they say all their people have to wear purple dresses with pink polka dots and that is the dress code so be it.

There are around 40 MILLION people currently unemployed and more getting the axe everyday with no end in site.

Some times real life isn't what we want it to be, but we have to live with it.

Just remember everyone is replaceable and there are Millions of people just waiting for those jobs to open up....

The employers know that too.

You have to appreciate the stupidity. There are signs up where I work that say, "For your safety, no guns, knives, or other weapons are allowed." We moved to a different building recently and, at the Director's staff meeting, the Building Manager sat there using a kitchen knife to remove old tape from the signs, so they could be put up in the new building.

Yes, I carry a knife at work and I know some other employees do, as well. Fortunately, everyone in my division that carries a knife, carries a tool and not a weapon (I'm the division chief).

Some of the sites I work on have banned everything but self retracting blades even the worlds most common Olfa knife has been banned! The really sad thing is that this is on construction sites

We have bomb detectors, metal detectors and x-ray machines at my job. But thus far I can carry whatever is legal in my state (sharpened edge no longer than 4"). People at my job know I have a knife (usually a SAK Tinker and a small one hand open folding knife).

Just don't wave it around!

I have read some down right disturbing posts in this thread. I've heard so many people on this site complain about the wussification of this country THEN I see a strong spirit of compliance from that same group. From where I sit, y"all part of the problem - 'oh I'm so scared of being fired, I'd eat poop if my boss told me to' seriously, I'm reading posts from people that will bring hypocrisy to a new level if they dare call someonelse "sheeple" :-(

It's called common since...... ;)

Having a job is much better than not having one these days..

Being unemployed isn't very fun and yeah the bills still have to get paid and people still have to eat.
