I have a friend of mine who's going into the Army, he leaves for boot camp in something like seven days. When he comes back I want to give him a few high value cutting tools. My thoughts were the cold steel trench hawk, some sort of Mora, and a 21st century Kabar. If anyone has any suggestions or input please comment.

Kabar makes very nice army knife with printing on the blade for different wars, branches of service, etc. As a decorative gift id go with one of those. As a user it depends on what he likes to do with them outside of the service or if you want him to have something for military use. For that check out the busse, swamp rat forums if you can get your hands on one quick enough ;)
Not sure of an online source for those kabars but request a catalog and u will see what I mean

When I think of high value cutting tools I think of the Ontario RAT-1 folder and Condor fixed blades.

Depends on what he would use it for. The Trench Hawk is a weapon, if anything. The Mora is a good "all around" knife. The Kabar is nice, but there are much better knives for the money.

Also, a side note, I suggest getting him a Leatherman before he leaves. A very useful tool, and it won't get him in trouble.

Maybe an ESEE 4? That one knife will handle everything a knife needs to and it will be replaced "no questions asked" if damaged. I think they are very "high value" and they have very good LE/Mil pricing (Mike and Jeff hold the military in VERY high esteem), just contact ESEE. If you want to give him some swagger down range, buy him a Himalyan Imports Khukuri:D I loves mine! Take care and God bless your bud!

Definately a mult-tool will be used more. As for as knives i would say it depends on his MOS on how much use they will get. A good folder always helps.
