Knives for groomsmen?

I'm looking around for gifts for my groomsmen in June. I need gifts for five guys. Suggestions so far have included engraved flasks, those golf tool thingamajiggies, mugs, and friggin' cuff links. After I got my laughter under control I got to thinkin'. I'd like to give knives. Problem is I'm pretty poor and I have to keep it reasonable (meaning cheap.)

I'm starting to think the thing I'd REALLY like to give is Cold Steel Bushmen. I can get 'em for $11.50 apiece and I did a nice cord wrap on mine, which I could do cheaply on theirs.

My question--is there a better deal somewhere? Better knives to give? One of the things I like about this idea is that I get the feeling I'll be the only one in my area to do it. I like being a little unusual.

If you want a nice looking, classic, useful knife to give, you can get the Victorinox Soldier from Blowout Knives for less than eight dollars.

I bought a slew of them to keep around just for gift giving. A great little tool to have.

Hi Gwinny,

Have you thought about giving them sword canes?

You can find them for around $20.00

John

I gave SAKs some years ago with some nice engraving. It ran about $40/knife.
If I was doing it over I'd prob give a Spydie or BM for the folder crowd. Funds allowing would gain a small fixed blade.

I gave all my groomsmen SAK's.Nice gift for the non knife crowd.

I gave all my groomsmen tiny Kershaws (alum. handles, 1 1/2" closed length).

I wasn't sure if they would appreciate larger knives; this way they could attach them to keys, or throw them in with their loose change.

If you know they would all like knives, I'd go for a classy, slim gentlemen's folder. nothing bigger than a Delica.

I was the groomsman for a buddie about fourteen years ago, and the groom gave us a cute little lockback, that I only carry when I wear a suit, (christmas, easter and a wedding or funeral here or there).

I was quite touched by it, and think the small sak would be an excellent idea.

So far those SAK soldiers are in the lead. Perhaps I was not clear on the issue of cheapness--this means I'd like to get out for less than $20 per knife total. I do not have $100 to spend on this, much less $200. You folks had lucky groomsmen; mine will just have to get by!

Swordcanes would be illegal in almost any jurisdictiction that I can think of, so I would be leery of that gift, but an engraved SS Delica would be very nice as would an SAK, especially for non-knife folks. Just remember to ask for a penny in return so that the knife won't cut off your friendships. (Old knife superstition)

Glad you like the recommendation. I almost forgot one thing…

Congratulations!

I just came across this website today and thought of this thread; the first two Buck gents knives are under $20 and the all stainless handles would make a nice area to engrave with the groomsmen's names or something.

I think a SAK "pocket pal", is somewhere around ten bucks or so.

And yeah--congradulations!

Why not get em some bolt cutters so they can cut you loose from the old ball and chain? HAHAHAHAhahahaha...

Okay, so it wasn't very funny. Good luck and may the best man... err...

Gwinny,
I've been thinking about the same topic lately. I would also like to give knives to my groomsmen but don't have much money to spend. Plus, some of my friends don't know anything about knives.

Here's what I was thinking about:

These little guys are well made, cheap, sharp, and handy. The blades can even be replaced if a non-knife-loving friend keeps messing the edge up. Just an idea.

Them:"What's that clipped to your pocket, a beeper?"
Me:"Uuh....yeah, something like that."

Gotta go with Blades and recommend the SwissTech. Great tool that will certainly a) come in handy, b) be used everyday, c) get conversations going. Super useful, helped me keep a car on the road (bumper vs snowbank issues). Plus, unmatched customer service.

They'll like it...

edit: oops, Blades likes the utility key, I'd go with the original plier thing... no blade but 100% tool...

If your budget is tight you can give away Gerber L.S.T.s. They are very cheap and quite functional. I gave them away at my marriage.

Another thought... CRKT Delilah's PECK. Small, light, cheap, and once again a conversation piece. Just remember the inherent dangers of the 'sandwiched' knife design. I haven't had problems, but I've heard a few tales.

Very non-threatening to the flock...

Don't worry, these guys aren't knuts like us but they're a long way from sheeple. They'd love it if I gave 'em Microtech autos--but those are illegal and expensive . . . .
