Hello,

I would like to know what the knifemakers carry as prime everyday knife ?

What carries Chris Reeve? Sal Glesser? Bud Nealy ? Darrel Ralph? Rob Simonich? Jerry Busse? Kit Carson? Ernest Emerson? Les de Asis? ...

For example, Fred Perrin carries his La Griffe in 1075 forged everyday. And that's his main knife for all chores around his workshop.

Sal Glesser should have a serrated Military...

Normally, I carry one of my Stellite pieces in street clothes. Can't seem to keep one in there for very long anymore, so I've been carrying a CRKT M16-04B prototype with coated blade.

In my work clothes I carry a medium Model 4 drop point with 440V blade.

Kit ! Hello.

Knivemaker got a very intimous relation with
knives done by other company on their design.
Fred for example is fond of Emerson Titanium Claw...

Is Darrel Ralsph carrying an Impulse ?

Cheers,

JM

Depends on what I have of mine, to carry. My favorites to carry are the "Patrolman", the "Sniper", and or an "MNK". If I were going hunting, or hiking I would carry something larger, like my "Tactical Hunter". I always carry something of mine. Just kind of depends what is available to choose from. These days that is not much.

Thanks for asking,

I don't carry a fixed-blade regularly, but when I do I have one of my drop-points or "tactical" prototypes, something of that nature. Also keep these tucked around in various places like my car trunk.

For a folder I honestly have never gotten around to making myself one; they're such an investment of effort for an amateur like me that I feel the need to sell them and put the money back into my shop. Some day soon, though... I do carry pieces I've modified all the time, most often a Micarta-handled AFCK.

I'm not a Knifemaker, but I know that at the NY Custom Knife Show when I asked Michael Walker what he carried, he showed me his Boker "Skywalker". The reason? It was FREE!
The only thing he had changed was he removed the stud, he said he didn't care for them.

JM,

I know Rob Simonich is extremely busy getting ready for the upcoming show in southern California. So I hope he doesn't mind. My understanding is that around the shop you'll always find him carrying and using a hawkbill Cetan. When he goes hunting or is in his "sunday-go-to-meeting-best", I'm not sure he has a "standard". Hopefully when he comes up for some air he'll clarify things himself

I tote a Cold Steel Mini Pal on my key ring. Used to carry a Schrade Uncle Henry folding hunter, but gave it up a few years back. Michael

My daily carry is a folder, err, folders.
Generally the Axis and the Carnivour.

I've yet to carry one of my own knives on a daily basis.
The reason?
Every time I make a small totable-for-everyday-use knife, one of my family or friends ends up with it.
The fixed blade I carry when I'm able is my 6 3/8" spear pointed, full height flat grind, D2 bladed, G10 handled, leather sheathed "Walkabout".
It was my first foray into using D2. Heat treated by Paul Bos.
Wouldn't part with it for anything.

I got tired of selling every knife I made for myself off my belt. (Those were mostly small, fixed blade utility knives), so I now carry a small utility of mosaic damascus with fossil ivory in a horizontal kydex scabbard. With the good advice I've received on working titanium on the forum, it will soon be replaced (hopefully) with a mosaic/anodized Ti folder. Yes, for the guys like Kit who told me 10 years ago to make folders, I'm gona break down and do it!

Hello,

The "I Want To Buy The knifemaker Personnal Knife" syndrom is a very popular disease !

I carry a 2 1/2" to 3" neck knife and a 3" liner lock with a D2 blade and bone handles (my last folder) The neck knife is usually made of 52100 and the handle is skelatized, bone, or sambar stag. If it is a social event, I will carry a damascus neck knife with bone handle.
I do have several knives from friends that are custom makers, but those I keep on display for the rest of my friends and associates.
I have found very little that I can't cut with the smaller blades. Even if I have to take two strokes. Ray Kirk RAKER KNIVES

bald1 - A Simonich story from the BLADE Show:

While all of us forumites were hanging out flicking our newest folders open and closed, open and closed, Rob would pull out his Cetan from a belt sheath and say (with a sly grin), "Click!" to simulate the sound that a folder makes. Hehehe. Quite the joker.

I have the same problem!! Anything I make and carry winds up in someone elses hands!! I don't mind, I just never carry the same knife long enough to get used to it... I like the M2 Stryker and AFCK. They are common, they cut well and if I loose one, I wont cry. I also carry other makers knives from time to time.
Lately I've been carrying my Tactical Prototypes and sort of field testing them at the same time. I have a sheath design that is comfortable and hides the 8" knife very well.
Often I will go "old school" and carry one of my old Case knives. People try to buy them too but I say, NO WAY!!

I can verify the "click" from Rob's Cetan.
A very scary sound if you arent ready for it.

Nemo - I'm usually carrying more than one knife most of the time. Usually a prototype or first production piece and I make sure to use them in a variety of situations to make sure there are no "glitches".

If I just choose one to carry, It is usually a Military and usually serrated. I keep my "using" knives very sharp so plain or serrated does most chores well.

I emptied my pockets for this thread; 1 Shabaria (plain), 1 SpydeRench (fully serrated), 2 SpyderCards (1 each) and 1 Calypso Lite (plain). But the Shabaria and the Rench are getting the use.

Next week I expect the Dyad Jr. Lite to come in. I will probably drop down to just the one knife to see if it will perform as an everyday knife.

If I'm down to high activity where only one knife is practical (White water, bicycle, Jogging outdoors, etc, then I'll usually carry a lite weight, either an Endura, Delica, Rescue Jr. or Calypso Jr.

This carrying and testing of knives is probably the toughest part of the job.

Sal,

If it's getting too tough and you need....

Well you know the rest (I just couldn't resist!)

The longest I’ve ever carried one of my knives was 2 years. The shortest time was 2 weeks. I thought I would keep the one I carried for 2 years forever. Just last month a customer of mine offered to purchase every knife I had finished (including the one I was carrying). I think, “OK” and smile.
Please understand this is not a complaint. :} It has caused me to think a lot about what I want to carry next. Perhaps a pearl inlayed interframe, adjustable springs, scale release automatic with some “fine” filework on a slow drop point blade. Finished off with some engraved grapevines. My only problem is somebody always loves it more than I do.
Do I have a favorite style or design? I appreciate anything made well as long as it works well. My last favorite knife was X12 on my web page. My next favorite? I’ll let you know.
I love what I do.
