Knives for the boundary waters

Buy it. You misunderstand the purpose of the support group. Knives anonymous? Nah... Knives unanamous. Buy the knife. ;)

Last time I went canoeing I took a Mora 2000 and it worked great. It's easy to hang onto with wet/slimy hands.

Pretty husky knife for weighing less than 5 oz with sheath and losing it wouldn't hurt as bad as with a BR. Ragnor has them in orange now.

Your earlier idea for a folder is a very good one - the Spyderco Pacific Salt.

I keep a Spyder Hawk (Salt) on my PFD, but they are no longer made. Before they came out, I used a Tasman Salt.

Other similar choices are the Salt I, Endura, Delica, Byrd Cara Cara 2, Byrd Meadowlark, and Byrd Hawkbill. I like the Salt series very much. The Byrd series is a very inexpensive way to try different Spyderco patterned knives. I have found them useful.

The Emerson Endeavor is a similar knife that is excellent.

Another great Spyderco Salt knife I really like is the Aqua - also discontinued. It's very light and comfortable for food prep and carving, etc.

Victorinox Fieldmaster is a favorite of mine because it has the tools I want - saw, scissors, Phillips screwdriver, can opener.

I also carry a Silky Super Accel.

Anyway, that looks like a great fixed blade you picked, so I see no need in continuing to blab about the ones I like.

:thumbs up:

On my trips to the BWCA, i usually bring a Sven Saw, lightweight hatchet, BK2, BK14, filet knife and a multitool. The BK2 isn't usually used much, but serves as a nice comfortable backup for the hatchet/saw.

I found my fixed blade. This just showed up today. Now I need to settle on a folder.

Great choice, I love my Grey Wolf, it takes and hold an amazing edge.

There are bugs in there. Stay Out. I'd recommend Sven and Ole's in Grand Marais. In which case you'd need a pizza cutter. On the West side, I'd recommend the lounge at the Grand Ely Lodge, in which case a table knife would handle your Walleye Sandwich just fine.

Sven and Ole's is a tourist trap. Much better food at the Blue Water Cafe or the Gunflint Tavern.

Just sayin'. :D

I'm Boundary Waters bound in less than a month. Seems that weight wasn't a problem for me last time so I'm packing more.

Fiskers folding saw-mostly for others in the group to use since I don't trust them with my...
Victorinox One-Handed Trekker-great saw, bottle opener, etc
Leatherman Wingman-not-so-great saw, pliers which did some much needed boat repairs last time
Lone Wolf Big Water Fillet-for all of my aquatic needs
Cold Steel GI Tanto-big, cheap, fine for chopping

Hope I helped by telling you the opposite of what you asked for.

So, I'll have a folding saw, multi-tool, fillet knife, and trying to decide on a small folder and a lightweight belt knife. I have been eye-balling the Spyderco Pacific line for awhile now. This might be a good excuse to pick one up.

The Salt series of knives are great blades. It the closest you can get to a zero maintenance blade (the occasional sharpening being the only thing it needs). They're also super light and thin making then easy to carry just about anywhere. I'd recommend the serrated version if you do get a salt though, they're much better performers then the plain edge models.

This is my Pacific Salt SE, only 3 ounces and 3.5" of razor sharp teeth!

Well, I am headed out Friday morning so I thought I would bump this back to the top for any last minute suggestions. My list of knives/tools (subject to change)

GWK for any bushcraft work or battoning.

GEC #71 Bull Nose in a RedBeardo leather sheath.

And probably throw a SAK Electrician in there too:

Sound about right? Overkill? Thoughts, concerns, ideas?

Have a great trip.

Please keep the fixed blade readily and securely accessible when on the water.

I had a relative by marriage die after getting fouled in lines on a canoe trip. He had no knife and his partner had a Leatherman that he couldn't deploy while struggling against the water to free Mike from the line.

You can punch me for naming the bad what ifs just before you go....

What have you been getting for temps in the day and overnights?

Days have been nice, 70 or so, but the nights drop to low 40 and even high 30s. I saw some leave starting to turn over a week ago. Had record wet spring, but it's been pretty dry lately. Last week had some rain, but should be good for ya. I live an hour away, but haven't made it up there for a couple years. That's going to change next summer!
