While serving in Somalia in 1992 I liberated a Somali rebel of these knives. They are crude in design and made of very thin steel.

Crude, but I wouldn't want to be on the business end of one. Thanks for sharing. Wonder where they sourced the steel?

I really like the gladius styled one, it almost looks like it could be an antique. And never have I seen a better use of the word "liberated" than here.

I have no idea where they sourced the steel but your right about the intended purpose of these knives.

I was all over the Middle East and N. Africa throughout the 90's. I spent most of my recreational time shopping for gold jewelry for the "ball and chain". At that time I had little interest in knife collecting. Opportunities missed!:(

I just located an old photo of me while in Somalia.

thanks for sharing this, i bet they started life as some sort of leaf spring and were then hardened. Tough to say what that spring might have been tho.

Thank you for your Service to our Country , especially in that hell-hole.

Very interesting , I wonder what nasty stories those knives can tell ?...

Thanks for sharing :)

Thanks for sharing! I LOVE seeing ethnic knives that the locals used--whether for good or for ill. ;)

Assoc, thanks for your service to our country.

Very interesting looking knives! A bit saex-like if you ask me

Interessting knives. What are the handles made of? Seems to be of any synthetic or horn or whatever...

Interessting souvenir, though I wouldn´t want to be in our boots during that time.

Kind regards

The one with the brass pommel looks to be real horn. The other looks like it could either be plastic or rubber, but that's just a guess.
