Knives from Somalia

I was all over the Middle East and N. Africa throughout the 90's. I spent most of my recreational time shopping for gold jewelry for the "ball and chain". At that time I had little interest in knife collecting. Opportunities missed!:(

Where did you shop for gold? I purchased some gold at the gold mart in Dubai. If I'm not mistaken the gold market in dubai was the largest single market in the world.

I would guess the thin steel as being from a some saw. It goes to show it doesn't take money to be deadly.

I was going to say saw blades. There's no way those are made of leaf springs. Very interesting, I have an Israeli/Bedouin dagger that has a very similar handle shape, blades are similar, but the Bedouin blade juts out a little more dramatically.

I'd guess saw blades as well.

Interesting thread. Appreciate your sharing these, and service as well.

I was thinking saw blades until someone else said it.

Kind of look like worked on prison shanks in a way. A little scary to think about their history.

Those are the most interesting knives I've seen in some time. Thanks for sharing the pictures.

just looking at the pictures .. the knife with the horn and brass handle looks like it is actually a re-purposed file ... the maker of it tho , has taken a lot of pride in his work . THe one with the black handle .. has a look of horn about it but I dont know , its photos , hard to tell , looks to me to be newer . Interesting to see , thanks for posting them

The knife with the brass Crown is traditional,I bought mine in Berbera Market in 1959 much to my Mum's displeasure, I was just 13.I travelled through out the country and these knives where common place. Herdsmen carried bigger versions blade of about 12 inches 300mm in length. It's a mystery as to the supply of brass the blades made from old vehicle springs

Chocolate Chip camo BDUs and A2s - good stuff!

The crown handled knife has handle scales that look like some type of horn. Interesting knives.

Guy I hung out with while inprocessing to 2/187th had been with 3/75th there in '93. Stories he told made you want to see that placed bombed until it was a sheet of glass.
