Knives I took to Kauai

I spent about ten days after Christmas in Kauai with my family. I had planned on doing alot of hiking and snorkeling, so I knew I had to plan my knives accordingly. I settled on my Kershaw Outcast, Spyderco Pacific Salt and my ECOS kiridashi neck knife. I threw in my Spyderco Salt 1 as a backup should anything happen to my pacific salt, but it did not even leave my suitcase.

The Outcast worked well on my hikes. There were a bunch of nasty storms while we were there and the high winds knocked down alot of trees over some of the trails. The outcast did very well in clearing some of the limbs to allow us to pass over or under the trees. The only thing is that it held up the worst in terms of corrosion, I had to give it a good cleaning once I got home even though I thought I had been keeping it dry and oiled. I'm glad I didn't remove the black coating like I had been contemplating. The outcast also proved itself in deconstructing some coconuts throughout the trip. I figured out a way to discretely mount it on my pack, and I think it might replace my hatchet on alot of my trips around here now. I was really happy with this knife

My pacific salt PE was the star of the show for me. I had it with me everyday, and it lived most of the vacation clipped IWB to my board shorts. Snorkeling, body boarding, or even just swimming, it stayed clipped and didn't really rust at all. I would rinse it with fresh water when I got out if I remembered, but it held up great and would be my daily EDC now if Detroit didn't have a pesky 3" ordinance. I really fell in love with a bigger blade for EDC.

My ECOS kiridashi was also on me the entire time. I figured the 1095 would not hold up well to salt water, and I put it into my waterproof pocket along with my ID and cash whenever I was going to get wet. It did not end up rusted at all (which surprised me when the outcast got pretty bad). I had it rigged up for neck carry with some 550 cord, although now that I'm back at home it's back to its home on my key ring. I liked neck carry, especially because I was often just wearing a light button down so the knife was very accessible. Its a great size for EDC stuff, and as I said it held up to the corrosive environment remarkably well. For those of you familiar with ECOS, this is one of his very early pieces.

All the knives I brought served me very well.

Glad you had a good time! Did the power go off on Kaua'i? We had an island wide power outage on O'ahu. Too bad it was raining while you were there, there are supposed to be some prime diving spots on Kaua'i. Thanks for the pics, they remind me that I need to pick up some H1 when I move back home...

edited to add: where did you all end up going hiking?

Thanks for posting the pics. Kauai has a beauty and laid back vibe that make it one of my favorite places in the world. I love Kauai, and spydies look even better there:

I would love to see a pict on how you mounted the Outcast. The OC is one of favorite knives these days but I carry in my pack. I am trying to rig something discrete.

I camped on a beach in Kauai for 8 days. My wife and I made all these plans to hike and kyak and I got to the beach and said this is it, Paradise. I am not leaving. It was an awesome trip. I brought my master hunter, delica, endura and leatherman.

I went to a gun shop there and they were selling bolos from the phillipines for $40 and I passed them by. I will always regret that.

I'll mount up the outcast on my pack and get a pic in the next few days. I'm pretty sure that you would need my specific pack to do it this way, but you can figure it out when you get the picture.

Yeah I too felt that Kauai was paradise, and I nearly tried to get a job while I was there so I could stay. The YMCA had a sign up that they were hiring pool lifeguards (I'm a lifeguard as a part time job, but don't have the skills for beach lifeguarding) but my girlfriend wouldn't let me go and pick up an application.

Where was the gun store? I was looking all over the place for somewhere I could buy something useful instead of a t-shirt or a stupid souvenir, and I never saw anything like that. Well next time I guess, I would have loved to bring home a bolo instead of a red dirt tee shirt.

I'll get the outcast mounting picture up soon.

I used to live on Kauai, and Oahu, so I know both islands very well. Used to pig hunt on the lower part of that area. You past the Hunter's check station going up the road on your right about 1/2 way up:D

By the time you wash your hiking clothes out they'll all be 'red dirt shirts'!! Nice place to live if you have the coin, and can be low profile. The locals rule, East and West sides, and can be quick to point out their turf should you be from the 'other side of town' I used to live North of Ka'Pa past the heli pad. Near a place called Secret Beach.

I will try to dig up the address. It was a while ago but I am sure it is still there.

These bolos were awesome, 5160 wooden handles. At the time I wasn't totally passionate about bolos but of course that changed quickly and now I have a small regret.

I can't wait for the pict.

I feel the same way everytime I go to any of the Hawaiian islands. I have started gearing some of my residential appraisal experience and continuing education towards being able to competently appraise on island. If you bring the girlfriend to Kauai often enough I bet she will come around, try a summer visit, it's hotter but you can swim/snorkel at almost every beach, and the mai tais taste even sweeter:D

Thats exacly where I was. I wanted a picture of my D4 from the lookout, but wasn't sure how crowded it would be, and didn't want to scare any mainland sheeple. I have some friends who thought I was crazy bringing a knife to Kauai but it served me well. I also noticed alot of knives on locals, clipped in pockets, and a few small sheath knives, many of the locals are very outdoorsy and understand the value of a good knife.

My girlfriend loved the place and said she could live there, I think the main reason that she wouldn't let me pick up an application is because I've got four years of undergrad biology and am about to finish up my masters in medical science, and she thought giving that all up to be a lifeguard didn't make any sense. I guess she might have a point, but I did love that place.

My parents also thought I was nuts for bringing knives with me, but then when we were all going on a hike my dad asked if I had an extra knife that he could carry. ;) Anyway, the next time I go I will try to make it in the summer, there were some regions of the interior of the island we couldn't get to due to flooding, and we got stuck in Hanalei one night when they closed the road to princeville. Spent the night at Tahiti Nui, it helps that we had made friends with one of the owners, Christian. Great place, great mia tais, and they just started up their luau again, and we were at the first one. I really loved that place.

Nice trip and knives, the only problem with D2 is that it does corrode easily, I have a couple of D2 knives, I make sure they are well oiled and coated, the steel is worth the effort!
