Knives I Wish I Didn't Buy....

What do you enjoy carrying now clockman? I like my XM-18 the best, followed by either my Spyderco Military or my Benchmade 710. :D

I have been seriously thinking of the 710. Do you find it to be a little on the heavier or beefier side? (looking for heavier)

Add another one for the SOG Trident. I bought one 3 or 4 years ago and carried it for a year before replacing it with a CRKT m-16 Titanium. Then I got into the ZT, Chris Reeve's and Customs. I wish I didnt buy the Microtech Dual Action ATCF with ivory Micarta Scales and 2 toned blade. That was a slick knife I will never see again as Some unforseeable costs came up and it had to go. It was an old enough microtech that the quality, fit, finish, and everything was spot on. Knife porn if i ever did see it.

My #1 regret is my Case Humpback Whittler. It was my foray into semi expensive slip joints. The first one I received had issues and was returned for a replacement. The replacement isn't perfect, and is way to stiff to open. I despise this knife, and carry it only because it cost $60. Anyone want to buy it? It really soured my taste for Case knives. From there I'd say my CRKT M16 and Stiff Kiss tanto. You get what you pay for.

Just 3 combo edge knives that I bought when I was just getting into folders. I regret getting the combo edges.

Every knife collector should get a BM710 in their Benchmades, as well as a 940 (series) and maybe a Griptilian - others like the Grip but I loathe them. I can't even deploy one w/o the pocket clip attached because of the big round plastic handle.

Couple knives:
A small custom file knife. Good knife but just too small for my tastes. Also the sheath wasnt my taste.
The Boat Tail Skandi from BHK. Again, not a horrible knife but it wasnt my thing. Havent been able to sell it either:P
Emerson--just don't like politically oriented companies. Didn't really look into the back ground enough and got it because of the design. Checked the website and was embarrassed that I owned the knife. Still got to sell it even though it has been a pretty good knife.

the sog trident is pretty infamous I gather. Always thought it was a really tacticool looking knife. Maybe it would be much better cheaper, had liners, and w/ no serrations?

Well I sort of like my SOG Trident, nothing fancy of course, but hasn't been a bad knife for me. I do agree there is a fair amount of blade play. The one thing(s) I regret buying is non-namebrand Chinese crap off of Flea-bay back in high school. Thankfully they're all in the trash. My cheaper, semi-nice knives I still love for very different reasons than my more expensive ones.

To finally answer the poster who wanted to know what I didn't like about the ZT 0551, it is simply a bit more svelte 0301 - which I already had. My objection to most of the knives I've bought and somewhat regret is based on real need - they duplicate previous purchases. To be honest, once I bought a BM 630 Skirmish, I was fixed for large Ti-framelock/S30V knives. Last autumn's purchase of a WC/CRK 'StarTac' Umnumzaan was a real extravagant purchase - certainly regretted on one main attribute alone. Simply put, how will anything else compare with perfection?

A case in point: Last week, at a local sharp-thing emporium, I was offered an old-new-stock Bradley Alias I in Damascus - for less than half it's $750 MSRP. Beautiful blade... but, I fondled it first - smooth action. Sadly, a white spot on a frame edge - no nick - then a burr on another edge - anodized over! I know it's made by BM, but I cannot imagine a BM making it out the door like that - certainly none of mine did. Blame the loss of that sale on my one CRK folder - for that money, it should be right! Heck, blame it on the BM 630 - it's nearly perfection, too - including the used one I bought as a carry version (Now I can't tell them apart!). Therein lies another regret - why buy backups?

The simple answer is gluttony. My preferred excuse is that I am a knife-slut - and there is no cure.

I don't keep knives I functionally don't like/enjoy... I have a son who likes knives...

Stainz

PS I have not gotten rid of any knives since Christmas! The ZT 0551 is a keeper... heck, they all are!

I had way to many Spydies and in the last two weeks I have sold 86 of them and have just over a 100 left and they will be sold in the coming month or so. The only ones I am going to kep are the ones I had Engraved and about a half dozen that I really like for one reason or another.! I can think of other things that I would rather collect that will only go up in value and never come down to lose money.
That is my .02 cents worth for what it is worth.!*

I went on a traditional Scandinavian and Finnish knife kick being then and always pleased with Mora. I bought pretty much the whole Roselli line. I still like them as interesting "artifacts". They have pleasing lines, good steel most of them, razor sharp on a bad day. I love to look at them. BUT...at the end of the day, the only two I have left are a Roselli Hunter and an Iisakki Jarvenpaa leuku...and I may sell the leuku. The lack of a guard is something with which I am not comfortable...or not as comfortable as I would like. Scandinavian tradition basically stipulated that guards are for kids but I think there is probably a reason that just about every other knife tradition, from all over the globe, includes a guard.

Take note that it was the whole package that I am not comfortable with. I love the Scandi grind and I still love the modern Moras.

So I wish I hadn't spent $1K or whatever it would turn out to be on all those nice Scandi/Finn knives. Fortunately, they remain popular and I was very successful selling all of them, some at cost, on the big auction site. I wish I had taken that cash and purchased two or three Koster Scandi grind knives in CPM 3V.

Kershaw Breakout...

Not that its a bad knife, in fact I love it.

But I sliced a chunk out of my ring finger tip within 30 minutes of getting it.(yesterday)

And I knicked my thumb today.

My freaking BM 42 hasn't even bitten me this much. i think this thing is cursed

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Follow... ALL my knives have drawn my blood soon after aquisition...goes with the hobby. (Nothing serious, though...yet!) :)

My regrets:

Ontario RAT-1 -- too big of a folder for me to carry/use where I live (practically, not legally) and with what I do everyday.

Spyderco UKPK S30V -- with a GEC Scout--an all-time favorite--to compare it to, the UKPK just seemed so ungainly and uncomfortable to hold. This knife taught me that the "great ergos" and rough textured handles that are so popular are not for me.

Victorinox Farmer -- Part of the reason I was disappointed with this knife was because of all the hype around it. But the real reason it just sits in a drawer is that when I took it out to use it, I just didn't like how it functioned: I don't need a saw the size of the one on this knife, and when I used the main blade for some wood work, the spine of the saw and awl created uncomfortable hot spots almost immediately.

Victorinox Pioneer Alox -- It creates hot spots on the hand like the Farmer does, which means it's relegated to light cutting tasks for me, and in that case I'd rather carry the Bantam Alox or Cadet.

Benchmade Rant Drop Point -- Don't like the handle ergos or texture. Also, I'm liking tall blades (measured from spine to edge) less and less.

Does anyone else have knives they dont really use enough but can't get rid of them?

The only knife I've bought and don't use it, but can't seem to get myself to sell it is my CRKT M21-14. Other than that, I could get rid of it if anyone wanted it, but my Emerson CQC14 Snubby. What a sh*t lock, even after sending it back to EKI twice. I'll never buy another Emerson. Any other knives I've regretted buying I've been able to sell.

I regret buying a fully serrated Delica in zdp. I tried to like it but, I hate it.

wish i diddnt buy, crkt hissatsu, crkt m60 sotfb i was in my tacti-cool phase. we've all had em

BM 940 and Sage 2. Learning experiences, but ultimately a waste of about $60. I traded them off for slight losses.

Nothing wrong with the designs or anything, just in my personal experiences the 940 was my first disappointment with BM, and the Sage 2's ergos were terrible for me.

At least I was able to trade them off though! For a while I thought I'd have them forever.

What disappointed you about the 940

Marfione ground Halo V. It's super nice and all, but I'm not a collector and now I have an $800 knife I don't give a whit about sitting in my safe. I'd rather have another pistol or AR or more ammo.
