Knives in federal buildings

Man, this is all ridiculous. Ok, I can see not having weapons in federal buildings... But why make it so complicated? So arbitrary? Why cameras and phones? I don't get it.

So per this thread I might go to jail for having a peanut in a post office? That's unacceptable.

I was in Washington, DC a couple years ago TDY. We were contractors with badges and went next door to eat at the DOT building. The guy sigh me had a 3 in knife and we had to go through security. He emptied out his pickets and placed the knife in the tray. We entirely through the metal detector and the guard handed him his knife back to him on the other side of the metal detector. That federal building had no issue with knives.

At the USAF secure facility I sometimes visit we can have 3.5 in assisted opening knives. They went by state law. They also had a sign at the visitor's center that we could check our legally owned firearms at the armory. I never tried that trick. They said just tell the gate guard that we had a firearm and proceed directly to the armory. No clue if it really worked.
