Knives in movies

As you guys probably know, there are quite a few instances of actors using high quality blades in TV and cinema (as well as cinema) quite often in the entertainment biz.

But why do companies use quality blades? Is it to gain street cred with knife people?

Could be because they look cool, Or the fact that they were supplied the knives by the company. If I remember correctly SOG supplied the knives for the movie Shooter with Mark Wahlberg for example.

Heck I think Mini supplied something around 20-23 mini coopers to the people who were making the remake of the The Italian Job, another Mark Wahlberg movie. They ended up running a repair shop just for their mini's if I remember correctly too as they kept trashing them for all their stunts, and even had to convert some to electric for the subway scenes. Lets just say that supplying those cars was a smart move on Mini's part as from what I remember their popularity shot up greatly after the movie.

Do they even know that such creatures exist? :)

I watched "The Fan". The main character is a knife salesman. It had a bunch of Gerbers (even mentions Gerber by name) and the Cold Steel Master Tanto, which they called the "Iwo Jima".

I thought the movie sucked and most of the knives did, too, with the obvious exception of the Tanto.

Normally the people writing stories where knives are being used, they are fans as well. Also, researching people and finding out what people really use.

Umm...if you are a knife, sword or gun knut I imagine being a prop/weapons master is perhaps one of the coolest jobs of all time (insert echo) of ... all...time! You are going to take it to the limit because you can and are getting paid for it. I do imagine product placement deals could but a kink in things quality-wise.

In the TV series "Lost" they had many scenes with characters using blades like a kershaw scallion and kabar USMC.

I just finished watching Season 2 of The Wire, and in one episode one of the bad guys cut a throat with a Spyderco, I think an Endura but maybe a Police. in another episode one of the cops uses a Delica, or maybe Endura, to get some heroin residue from a drain. Cool that both sides use Spydies.

Ha There's a buck 110 in the enbrel commercial :p
I believe the punch dagger from Bourne identity was cold steel ? Correct me if I'm wrong. I may be

Movie/TV Companies use a lot of different things. Some use what was available to them, either from the props department or their personal selection. Some are supplied by the knife companies themselves, in order to get publicity/be seen. Others use a knife simply because it has a certain look or style. Movie companies don't really care about getting "street cred" with "knife people".

+1

That makes sense to me from what little experience I have with productions and common sense.

I think that it is kershaw chive not scallion but I am not sure. And I saw buck 119 and spyderco harpy in Lost too.

The fact is movies are
a product of the imagination.
And movie entertainment
is the highest form of escapism
tailor made for the masses.
As a consequence
any knife which one sees on the silver screen
was cleverly placed there
purely for full dramatic effect.
So that a bad guy in a movie
would always have a menacing looking knife.
Or likewise for a hero,
who uses his intellectual capabilities more;
would be holding a multitool or the likes.
I suppose there are people in the props department of any film production crew
who would have enough product knowledge
on what would evoke
the required emotional response for a required film's scene.
Costing considerations would see the use of
existing off the shelf knives.
If there is any movie tie-ins
one can't usually predict the outcome.
particularly should the movie turn out to be a box office bomb.
