Knives made by CNC machines

It's not where its made or how its made, but how well its made for the function its made for, be it beauty or use. Frank

I think Michael makes a valid point about the effort that actually goes into designing the knife and creating the program.

I bet a similar argument arose when the use of powertools became widespread?? tools such as a drill press, belt sander, power grinder, etc that make knifemaking easier.

To throw another spanner in the works: check out wikipedia under 'knife' and it shows a pic of a factory worker at a knifemaking factory using a knifemaking machine.... is she a "knifemaker"?

I am not posing this as a question, just as a thought...

everyones got their opinion... if the bulk of the work is done on cnc... i'd say its a production knife.... if you can easily, quickly make identical facsimiles... isn't that one of the ideas of a production knife... .....

i don't think it'll affect the value of the knife... as they are done with precision... its just a new area of knife making....that the customer should be informed of...

i'm not sure why people try to lump everything into handmade.....
its almost as bad as that " sole authorship " knife bs

I asked myself the same question when I first encountered a custom knife maker that used a CNC machine, during my initial fascination and introduction in the custom knife world. My initial reaction was one of outrage and blasphemy...calling themselves custom knife makers. But the more I thought about it the more I realized it's merely a matter of personal perspective. Personally, I don't consider CNC made knives to be custom...when you compare them to knives that aren't made with a CNC machine.

I imagine it has to do with the fact that I came into knife making with preconceived notions and ideals of what constitutes a custom made knife. I'm a video game artist by trade, so creating something by hand, for me, gives the object soul that can be seen and experienced through the imperfections...or lack thereof. Once something is created by the use of software, no matter how much skill and dedication it requires, the soul that is transfered to that object is somewhat diminished or lost.

Just my thoughts on the subject.
