Knives 'n lights

I remember doing this about a year ago or so. There are a lot of new folks here so I thought I would ask again. Here's the situation; it seems that evrytime I place an online order, usually once a month, I always include a flashlight in the order, sometimes as an after thought. There is something that seems to connect these two items together for me, and I know there are some out there that have the same "problem".

I received an order yesterday that included a knife, Boker Titan Defender, and a new flashlight, the Nitecore EX10.

Who else suffers from this and who will come forward to give a testimony!!;):D

I too suffer from flashaholism! But, I am hooked on McGizmo's. They have spoiled me so that I really don't want any other lights but McG's for the most part. I also love Lummi's, for really small & bright lights.

I also suffer from the boyscout mentality, I never leave the house without certain items that I feel give me a good balance of minimum weight and maximum preparedness. Today I carried my Spyderco Endura 4, Maratac AAA (my flashlight of choice at the moment), and a Victorinox Hiker along with the usual items of course- keys, wallet and cellphone. If I plan on being more than a few miles from civilization I swap out my EDC folder with a fixxed blade and carry a good reliable lighter as well.

notme. A maglite solitaire has been on my keyring for the last ~15 years and I've never felt the need to upgrade. It does what I need it to do.

Looking for at least a 200 lumen AAA or AA flashlight. I have dozens of rechargeable AA's and AAA batteries, so I don't want to go with a CR123A flashlight.

Anyone know of a good, very bright LED light that doesn't use CR 123s?

Nitecore, JetBeam, Fenix, all make great AA lights. I don't believe any of those will be 200 lumens without using a 14500 rechargable battery though. 130-150 is about the best you can get right now in a standard AA battery. You have to remember the CR-123 have more energy than a standard AA. If you can wait another 6 months to a year I think the newer LED's just now hitting the market may do it.

P.S. And to the OP, I love Flashlights and have been a Flashaholic for as long as I can remember. I own more lights and Knives.

Good Luck

Bill

we are so alike!! :D

i haven't "graduated" to mcgizmos or lummis yet, but have scores of surefires, nitecores, and fenix lights.

i will never get into flashlight collecting...LED upgraded maglites good enough for me...

Wow, really? I'm glad you're immune & a LED drop-in kit in an outdated MagLite did it.

Seriously, I can't say I have nearly the same fever for lights as knives, but do have a few. My favorite smallish light is the Nova-Tac 120T, plus it works great if I'm not carrying my handgun with gunlight on it. For AA power, I have a couple Fenix L1Tv2's. 1xAA batter & 98/16 lumens. It's not bad.

Probably my best little light is an old Fenix P1 (90 lumens).

I'm sure the future will bring about some improvements.

I'm more consistant in my search for unique and "better" knives than I am with my flashlights.

I seem to go on flashlight binges.

I like and am satisfied by my LUMMI WEE and RAW lights, my BITZ lights, my MJP Micro Extremes, and the various modded Surefire and ARC flashlights I have - with the result that I don't search out newer lights.

educate me on why an upgraded maglite is dated...

(and i am glad i am immune..)

mainly the output to battery ratio is relatively poor with maglites.

eg, with a AA two cell, you get about 15 or fewer lumens with an incandescent. while the led upgrade is better, it still doesn't compare to a AA one cell fenix or nitecore. the nitecore defender rates at 150+ lumens, iirc.

cr123 powered lights will often generate higher lumen output compared to the AA counterparts.

without a reflector upgrade, you will also typically get the dark spot within the beam.

with the advanced circuitboards, many lights have variable settings with features like strobe and multiple brightness settings. the newer lights are also much smaller and pocket friendly.

i also dont care for the switch location on the larger maglights.

but as long as you are happy with the maglites, that is all that matters.

Surefire G2 with a cree LED drop in and a gerber infinity as a backup

Also love my traditional mag light 2 "C" cell with incan bulb.

Gotta get a Fenix keychain light fpr xmas though. Not sure what model yet.

size vs. performance, and technology; understood...but it also matter what you're gonna use these lights for...if weight and space is an issue, yeah these little firecracker are the bomb...

since i don't have a profession where size/weight is an issue regarding a flashlight, don't need to edc a flashlight, and i don't have a thing for getting the latest and greatest in gadgets (thank goodness)....

...i am happy with my (upgraded) maglites!!!

I have a couple of Fenix AA & AAA lights that are great -- but around the house I mostly use an LED-converted 2D Maglite. Tough, batteries last forever, focusable -- not much there not to like. Just used it this weekend in the crawlspace/attic installing recessed lights (yuk).

I'm not a flashlight freak, but both have their purposes.

"MORIMOTOM" (Thank you) answered for me & I know he's probably used them like I did. I do still have a rechargable MagLite, so it's not that I don't have one or don't like them, it's just that they're not really up with modern technology, that's all.

Also, since you don't EDC a light &/or don't need to use one on a daily basis, I guess the Maglites will work fine, but even given their price (For a new one) & their size & output, they're dated & not really the best deal anymore.
