I was wondering what you guys think of Knives of Alaska knives? I like some of their designs, and I'm looking for a new general use hunting knife. Are they good quality? Worth the money? I don't have any specific model in mind, just wondering in general.

I know many many hunters like them. I myself am not much of a fan for the simple reason the D2 steel they use is a more difficult steel to sharpen in the field, and the grinds are thick. But they are definitely rock solid knives that work. I prefer a more simple steel that is just as hard, but easier to sharpen, and thinner grinds than they offer.

I had a chance to use one extensively on a ten day trip in the Wind River Range one time. It was a friend's. I still remember it because it was such a pleasure to use. It impressed me at the time. I don't recall it being sharpened, or needing it, the entire trip.

I have a few the Jaegar in Desert Ironwood a beautiful burl in ATS-34 and an Alpha Wolf in Stag in S30V that are great knives. I also have a Cub Bear I use for caping that is in D2 and aside from D2 not being my favorite steel it works great for caping the suregrip is comfortable using for extended periods of time. sheaths are good ... are slightly canted on some models makes comfortable for carrying. These are older knives but if quality has stayed true I wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

The only Alaskan Knives I have is one of their ULU.
Great knife, but I'm not sure if it is better than the Rough Rider ULU I have, that cost way less.

I have the Elk Hunter and have skinned and butchered 4 deer with it last year without touching it up. It will still shave arm hair effortlessly. It's just about the perfect all around hunting knife.

I wanted to try their friction forged D-2 steel, but I wasn't enamored of the shapes and sizes offered. I have a Ti Hobo set which is quite impressive.
