Knives of Alaska

I have an alpha wolf in s30v , it is my favorite knife for all hunting and edc period , thier d2 is awesome as well.

I have the Bush camp/cub bear model and am very happy with it. I I like 1095 steel better for ease of sharpening, but while it holds it's edge, I love the D2. I skinned 2 deers this year with it and that was after I had batoned 3 trees to make 2 home made bows for my boys. The D2 took a long time for me to sharpen but that may be because I am not the best knife sharpener.
The bows of course snapped but thats another story...

Yeah, its a bit odd. I live and hunt in Alaska and I dont know anyone that carries KOA in the field.

Yeah, i am a commercial hunter in arizona , where sometimes me and my guides process several elk or other animals on the ground in ONE day and i know few guides that dont have one or more of thier smaller models and love them . I guess in Alaska yall carry them 2 pound choppin knives cause everythings bigger , right?

I’ve always had very good experiences with them. My favorite knife form them is the Alpha Wolf. They are very good knives so long as you remember what they are and what they are not.

What do you mean by this statement?

I have their yukon belt knife in D2 and I like it good enough. Skins really well but I think the blade is too thick for general utility like slicing vegetables around the camp. With that said I still think that it would make a good woods knife because of its great edge holding capabilities.

Lol! When you hunt up here, there is a fair chance you are also being hunted.

Nah, once the skin is off and the animal is quartered most take it in to be processed or if they are subsistance hunters they use whatever is good from the kitchen.

It's always interesting to talk to different hunters from different parts of the country. I guess it wouldn't sound as fierce and rugged as "Knives of Florida"- Ha! I don't know any professional guides here, just family, and most use a Buck 110. I try to spread the wealth of knowledge I have learned here on Bladeforums about different steels and the superior edge holding ability of my D2 KOA knife.

I mean that they tend to be very specialized knives. While my Alpha Wolf for example is an amazing hunting knife (great ergonomics, good blade shape, love the steel) I don’t think it would be as effective as some other knives within its price point at other tasks. Many of the KOA knives I’ve had seem to be similar in this respect.

Instead of making a jack of all trades knife they seem to prefer to make a knife really good at one thing.

Does that make any sense?

They have some very specific blade designs, which is good.
I never bought one because the handles seemed a bit cheesy and the S30V models had kind of thin stock. They may be very good knives though. Maybe the newer ones are different.

I too have never seen anyone up here using one.

Almost everything, I really haven’t noticed any particular brand preference up here.

Very few safe queens. Knives, (and guns), are just a part of life for many, so they get used hard.

I’ve seen more machetes used up here than anywhere in the lower 48, mostly because it literally grows like a jungle in some areas. Trail and camp clearing warrants some of this. Otherwise, people aren’t in to whacking away at poor defenseless trees just for the heck of it. Foliage grows back right away during the next summer so there isn’t any waste.

One nice thing about this state is that you can carry about any size knife you want in public and nobody is going to raise an eyebrow. (An armed society is a polite society).
When out of city limits, a .44 Mag on your hip is not going to cause much of a stir either.
Curiously though, AO knives are illegal. Go figure.
