This Sat. I went from Fullerton to Simi Valley with a Benchmade 800 clipped to my left front pocket. Even with a bald head, long goatee and leather jacket the door guy just looked at my ticket and motioned me inside. In SoCal, no less. There is hope for people yet.

Hi All-

If the folder adheres to all ordinances I wouldn't make a big deal of it.

The bigger discussion is if you start to talk about a private property vs. public property situation. Conceivably, they could enact legislation to make knives illegal on trains in much the same way that they're not permitted on aircraft.

This is from the AMTRAK web site:
Prohibited Items: Checked and Carry-On Baggage

The following kinds of items are prohibited as both checked and carry-on baggage:
  • Any type of gun, firearm, ammunition, explosives, or weapon.
  • Incendiaries, including flammable gases, liquids and fuels.
  • Large, sharp objects such as axes, ice picks and swords.
  • Corrosive or dangerous chemicals or materials, such as liquid bleach, tear gas, mace, radioactive and harmful bacteriological materials.
  • Batteries with acid that can spill or leak (except batteries used in motorized wheelchairs or similar devices for mobility-impaired passengers).
  • Club-like items, such as billy clubs and nightsticks.
  • Fragile and/or valuable items (including but not limited to electronic equipment).
  • Animals (except service animals).
  • Oversized and/or overweight items.
Please note: This is not an exhaustive list. Any item similar to those listed, even if not specifically mentioned here, is prohibited from being carried onboard or checked as baggage.

I'm a conservative person, so I've never even had anyone give me a second glance. It would be interesting to see the experiences of others.

since I was a little boy 20-25 years ago. I wasn't sure what to expect. Just kinda surprised...one- this is CA...two- you can't take friggin nail clippers(nail clipper, please!) on a plane. It's was actually nice to see that the nice folks of Amtrak haven't lost their minds the same way the air travel folks have.

As an aside, it was a really nice trip. A lot nicer than driving through downtown LA.
