Knives on cruises?

I am 13 years old and will be going on a Carnival cruise to Alaska in about a week. I was wondering if I could bring my trusty Benchmade 940 on the cruise, I know that they allow knives with a blade under 4", but I was wondering if they ask any questions or would confiscate it because I am a minor. I don't want to lose it because I bought it with my own money and is my favorite edc blade. So if anyone with previous experiences could give any advice or confirmations. Thanks!

I cant imagine you would have to much trouble with it, unless you actually do something bad with it lol. If youre woried about losing it, you could consider bringing a cheaper knife, but i dont think you'd have problems. BUT ive never been on a cruise, so im not sure what their security is like, so dont quote me on that.

A victVictor recruit would be the perfect choice.

I wouldn't take it unless you have it in writing that you can take it. If it's legal think twice about it still, i you bought it with your money so you're gonna be keeping and eye on it and be responsible with it but do you wanna risk losing it when the likelihood of needing it is very low?

welcome!
never risk taking along your most favorite whatever on a holiday.
especially so if it has high sentimental or material value.
should things go south (i dunno if alaska counts),
the last thing you want to worry about are precious belongings.
rule of thumb, when in doubt - don't.
and bon voyage with another knife.

Or a Super Tinker. Or really any medium-sized SAK from Victorinox or Swiza (be sure to get one with the scissors and cockscrew). World-legal and more than enough knife + tools for the entire cruise.

I would say something a little different.
I'd definitely be taking it with me for a pic or two in Alaska. And it would be fun to know your best knife went somewhere far with you it's like your lil hommie. Lol knives are our friends. I feel close to my 940. It's even engraved. With I love you Dada and your my best friend , on the other side. My 4 year old wanted that put on it for father's day when he found out it could be written on. His own words now he's almost 8.
I would definitely be taking it with me ..

But.....

Other then pictures and in the room I would probably take a scraper knife on my daily exploring on the ship. Hot tubs pools chairs thief to much of a risk.

Just saying my 940 would be going so it would be even more nostalgic to me.

Knives are like my little friends. Lol sounds strange but they just are.

I would not carry the BM unless you have a small ballistic sheath to keep it in. A small Swiss Army knife on a keychain may be the better option. Cost is very reasonable and you can get it in a couple of days from one of the forum knife sellers.

No, please don't risk it. I took a Benchmade Mini-HK (tiny little folder) on a Disney cruise about four years ago deep in my checked luggage, and knew something was awry when my luggage was never delivered to my room with my traveling companions. A bit later I got a note on my door asking me to come to the Customer Service desk. When I did, I was told that a knife was detected in my luggage and that I needed top open it, and give it to them for safe keeping, with the understanding that it would be returned after the cruise when we returned to port. It was in fact returned to me, and everyone was really nice about it, but to find that little folder in probably 4,000 pieces of luggage was remarkable, and would give me serious pause about trying to beat the odds.

You will find many occasions to use an SAK after the cruise.

I just went on a carnival cruise in June, and took a delica with new problems. Asked me to put it in my carry on bag during security xray thing, but after that no problems or request to hold it n room or temporary confiscate. Never left my possession

They scan you going on the boat just like at the airport. If anything, I would carry something small and cheap.

Put it in your bag, and then carry it afterwards. It's not a problem.

You're 13, and you bought a BM 940 with your own money. Whether or not you would get into any hassle with it... do you really want to take that chance? How many lawns would you have to mow, or how many walkways/driveways would you have to shovel to make enough money to buy that knife again?

I agree with the suggestions above about an inexpensive Swiss Army knife. Were it me, I'd go for a Bantam or a Waiter model. Both can be had in the $15-20 range, and will cover any knife needs you could possibly have, but not be a huge loss if it doesn't make it back home with you. They are also totally innocuous looking to those who are not generally ok with knives.

Edit to add:

Oh yeah, and ask your parents...

Interesting choice.

Why would it be better than, say, a Classic like GatorFlash1 GatorFlash1 suggested, or Tinker, like E Etna suggested? There is zero need for a cap lifter or can opener on a cruise, it doesn't have scissors (which could be useful)...etc. I don't see the advantage. What cruise (or hotel) experiences have you had that led you to that choice?

I've never been on a cruise, but have stayed in many hotels...while in them, I have found that they cater to your needs. Kinda the whole point of a hotel or cruise.

I'd get a classic. Worst case, they take it from you. Best case, it is going to do everything you could possibly need to do on a cruise.

Most of your post is spot on, but I actually do find the cap lifter to be one of the handier tools on the SAK. I don't use it to open bottles all that much, but the flat head screw driver on the front of the cap lifter is great for small prying and scraping, which is actually where I tend to use it the most. I'd say on a day to day basis, the cap lifter and the blade see the most use of any of the tools on my SAKs.

It's one of the reasons I thought of the Bantam. It's the lightest, smallest and cheapest knife I could think of with my two most used tools on it.

But yes, you're 100% right that really knife needs on a cruise are slim to none. Of course, if you step off the ship in various ports or whatever, those needs may change...

Good point!
