Knives on the fence (sell or keep)

Was reading the Knives Sold and Repurchased thread, and it got me thinking about a similar scenario I have been contemplating: should I keep this knife or let it go?

In this case, not sure what to do about my BK24. I purchased it last year, just as they were about to go discontinued, and I even carried it quite a bit as a neck knife (a little heavy and large, but not terrible in that role). I haven't really used it much, cut a box or 2 and opened some mail. It doesn't help that I picked up a Guardian 3 in 3v at the end of the year that can cover a similar role and that I have carried quite a bit.

Knowing it is discontinued, does it stay, or does it go? Seems like a waste to keep it and not use it? Will I use it later? Will it sit in its drawer? Will I be upset when I sell it and can't find one again? Decisions, decisions...

Now, what knives are you on the fence about? (I will also accept literal pics of "knives on a fence" if you just collect them all and never sell, or sell and never worry about it :D ).

For me, unless it's a gift, knives on the fence usually head on down the road.

Most recently I was on the fence about my 710-1401 and Techno. Super cool knives and the Techno's f&f was the best I've ever encountered on a knife that I personally owned. Neither knife saw much carry time. There was always something I would rather carry so I let them go.

I sold them for a fair price and the new owners seemed to be very happy. In the end it all worked out for the best.

Sorry no pics, they went on down the road too:)

For me, there are some knives I really like... I just don't see when I would ever use them. I've always sold knives I'm on the "fence" about. Just frees up capital to buy knives that may end up being your dream knife.

For me it is $100+ knives. I have a hard time keeping one around when I know I can sell it and get to try something else.

Folders, I'm really on a fixed blade kick recently and I've debated pretty much selling all my folders I never carry anymore.

Yeah, I don't usually have the problem, but I think that it is because of it being disco and I keep seeing it held in such high regard that I feel like I might regret it...

I wanted a Techno for the longest time, bought one off the Exchange but never received it (seller was a scammer, thank you G&S). I waited a long time to buy another one, this time new from a dealer. When I finally got it, I found out my preferences have changed.

I've been considering selling one of my Randalls... I've had it for probably 15 yrs, and had it out of its packaging maybe 5 or 6 times in that period. The main obstacle to selling it is that IT'S MINE!!!

There are a few others that I'm starting to think I should sell; but I'm expecting to have the same problem.

If I find that a knife is just sitting unused and gathering dust, I'll sell it so someone else can enjoy it. Exceptions would be something rare or not produced anymore. A blade that I had made just for me would be in that category. I only have a couple real custom blades, so I will most likely hold on to them. Also I find if I have had a leather sheath made for a knife, it's most likely a keeper.

I'm on the fence about keeping the micarta scales on my Ritter Mini Grip or selling them and going back to the stock scales. It was the one and only time I've bought scales for a knife and it just bothers me the cost sometimes.

That's sort of where I am with the Randall...I ordered them in '97 or '98, when the projected wait time was about 1.5 years. It took 3 years to get them. Now the projected time is 5 years... so getting a new one isn't an easy thing (unless one is okay with the models & configurations available "off the shelf" at various dealers)

• If I don't use it, I sell it.
• If I open my storage and don't contemplate that knife, I sell it.
• If I have a knife that I like better for a role, or position in the lineup, I sell it.
• If I go a week without carrying a knife, I will force myself to do so and find out why I went the week. If I can't figure it out, it stays. If I remember why I didn't carry it, and I reassure myself of any reasonings (ergos are off, hot spots, don't like the alloy, et al), I sell it.

There is only one knife that I know I will never sell. The Large 21 sebenza made on the day that my daughter was born.
Everything else is on the chopping block, if it doesn't get used that is.

I sell ones im on the fence with. One's i really like tend to get carried more anyway. And as for the no longer made or limited runs, i feel that this will always happen. The knife industry is running strong, and there will always be newer, limited, and later discontinued knives down the road to experience. When im on the fence, i think its just my subconscious telling me i don't really want it and to keep paddling down the river.
