Knives that everyone should own

Any manual Microtech.

I believe everyone should own at least 1 alox SAK. Cadet, Farmer or Soldier, there is no way to go wrong. I also really like the variants with the pruning and electrician blades.

I'm also a big fan of the Delica/Endura family and I think they are a great value and will take a real beating for years to come.

Fianlly, though it's rare and much more expensive that the others mentioned, a Hinderer XM-18 could easily be the last folder you ever need to own. That thing will not break. I plan on passing mine on to my grand kids, if I ever have any.

Thanks, CM, for shooting my next year's knife budget all to hell. :p

I would add that other knives to experience are -

Spyderco ZDP-189 Caly III
Spyderco BG-42 Military
Kershaw OD-1
Kershaw Lahar
Benchmade Griptilian
Cold Steel Ultimate Hunter
Buck BG-42/Sambar Stag 110 (A real knife)
Buck 119
Emerson A-100
Emerson CQC-10

There are many others of course, but these ones seem to stand out for me.

how do manual microtechs compare, in terms of quality, to a high end spyderco or benchmade blue class? i've never seen one before

They are about on par with BM blue class if not a little better. Fit and finish on MT has always been up there. A manual Socom Elite is something everyone should at least handle.

I just looked it up, the style sort of reminds me of a rockstead knife
