i guess some of u have encountered such people. i myself have but never needed to get to violence. anyway when ur knife had to be drawn to scare them off, did it work? what knife were u using then? i myself carry an camillus edc and soon itll be crkt's urban shark which i think has a more tatical look. anyway all my knife blade is all below 3 inches, do u folks think it scare them off (if the time comes)? anyway what i really want to noe is ur experience and the knife that did the work of scaring trouble makers off.

I've scared people off with a 3" tanto but I never intended to scare them. I thought I would have to use it. Depending on a scary knife is not a great idea. A knife is deadly force; be serious about that or don't use it for self-defense at all. I was just lucky they decided to leave.

It's not always the size that counts. I believe Vampire Gerbil has used a Leatherman Micra in self defense situations. Then again, it might have been just the sight of VG that had them running!:)

The daughter of my martial arts academy's founder used a little fixed blade called a "street scalpel" (looked well under 3 inches) to run off a group of punks who were closing on her and a friend. Of course, it wasn't just an intimidation tactic/bluff with her. She would have done some serious damage with it, had the punks not retreated.

I've never been attacked, but whenever I feel I'm in a less than secure environment, I usually draw, possibly even open my folder and keep it 'palmed' and out of sight. If I do need to use it, I want to make sure the BG doesn't see it coming. If my knife is drawn, I have every intention to cut, if I have to cut, then it will most definitely count. This is in reference to an open area without alot of people, no need to scare the crap out of a bunch of people in a crowded indoor environment if there is no immediate threat. Every situation is different, but I never rely on intimidation.

I've got a friend who carried a full-size KA-BAR (12" OA length) back when he lived in a considerably seedy part of Brooklyn... hey it worked for him. :)

OK, first off, let me state that one should never pull a knife just to "scare someone off".
When a knife is pulled, it is a last resort your-gonna-get-killed or you are in serious fear for your life type of thing. Pull your knife just to scare someone away may get you into seriously deep trouble with the justice system or worse yet, you may get your ass handed to you by the person you just pissed off by trying to intimidate him/her.
Ok, School's out.

Now, to answer your question, yes, I have pulled my knife on a would be mugger before and yes he did run away.
I'm damned lucky he did not have a gun or more skill, or even more resolve than me.
My ass may well have been grass that night.
I made the serious mistake of not leaving myself an out one night(about 9:00pm) when I had to use the pay phone in front of the public library. Basically, downtown was all but deserted, the library closed, the phone was located near the entrance and I had walls on three sides of me.STOOPID! I was talking on the phone when I saw in the glass on the library's front window this guy size me up and start a rush at me.
I dropped the phone, turned around and flicked open my Military.
He saw this and promptly turned and hauled ass jumping a bench in the process of putting distance between us.

I cleared out right away too, as I figured he would flag down the first cop he saw and say I attacked him with a knife.
I didn't pull my knife to scare him, I had every intention of cutting him as badly as was needed for me to escape whatever it was he had in mind for me.

NEVER EVER PULL A KNIFE JUST TO SCARE SOMEONE! It'll be yer ass that goes to jail when they run to a cop and say you pulled on them.
Then there will be all that fun with lawyers and court dates and bail money and possible civil suits from the "victim". Quite a price to pay if one could have just as easily walked away. Knives are possible lethal weapons and pulling one should be only if an innocent life may be lost by not pulling it.

I was walking back to my dorm in the middle of the night,(in Richmond), when a guy came up to me asking for money. When I replied I didn't have any, he became angry, so I started to walk off. When I turned around, he grabbed my shoulder, and spun me around, with his other hand in his pocket. I didnt' even think about it, but had my large Cold Steel voyager out and open before he could pull his hand out of his pocket. He let go of me, and ran off, so I'm assuming he was actually unarmed. Pulling a knife thinking that you are going to have to use it is a very scary thing. Every now and then, I'll have a nightmare dealing with that situation, but of course things turn out differently. If I was smart, I would have never let myself get into that situation, but I guess you can't always walk in a group everywhere you go.

I was working in downtown Atlanta somewhere around Peachtree and 8th street. I had to meet my work buddy there very early in the morning in order to get into the jobsite. One morning arrived early and it was before sun-up. While I waited parked on the street with my window down, its hot in Atlanta in summer, a rather large fellow made his way over to my car. At first I didn't think much about it, because people moved through the area a bit to get to the nearby MARTA station.
Well, this fellow decided he wanted to be friendly. At the time I smoked, and in downtown Atlanta is not unusual for strangers to bum cigarattes. However, they don't usually walk up to your car! I give the guy a cigaratte and hope he will go away. Instead he starts talking about some rather unseemingly things this redneck don't get involved in, so I ask him to move on out. He decides he likes my company and pressed closer in on my car with his arm on the roof of the car.
Being unnerved I pulled my Gerber out of its sheath on the sun visor and started cleaning my nails. The fellow ask me what the knife was used for, after all it looks odd to most ppl when you clean your nails with a 3" blade. After I informed him that I used the knife to SKIN wire he finally took the hint and ambled off. I still don't know if he meant me any physical harm, but I felt trapped and this country boy was ready to cut his way outta the city. Needless to say, I was late to work everday after that because I was sure to wait on sunrise.

My Coldsteel Terminator, or the politically correct new name "Safekeeper", has done quite a good job of scaring off trouble.

This is true. Also make sure you know how to use it, don't think having a weapon will give you an advantage, just make sure you know what to do. I am decent with knife fighting and there allot of people I know that I would not want to fight knife to hand.

I have never had to use a knife but I did split the skull of a couple of jerks with my tactical four way lug wrench.A homicide detective paid me a visit the day after the encounter. I thought I must have killed one of them, but it turned out they were trying to press charges againt me for maiming them.It came out that one of them was a know bully and criminal so charges were dropped.

I actually saw this kind of situation back in high school many moons ago:

There were a bunch of kids hanging around in the smoking pit (back when that was allowed) at school, some of them ragging on one of the small members of their group, when he suddenly pulls a knife (the classic "lockblade" style) on one of the bigger members. There was a stunned silence for a while and then the bigger kid laughed, picked up the smaller kid and slammed him against the wall, took his knife and laughed some more. Just kids, but I think it illustrates the point. It certainly taught me the maxim of "don't pull it if you aren't going to use it".

I removed a Marine Corps issue K-Bar from an inverted rig just south of the DMZ with the intention of scaring a VC as badly as possible without making much noise. One of his partners shot me with an AK-47.., so I never actually found out if my K-Bar scared him or not?

In Chicago a few years back I was walking within sight of the Hyatt Regency on Wacker. I big guy stepped in fron of my path and clobbered me with a sap. I never saw it coming and went down on all fours. the SOB then stood there deciding whether or not to clobber me again for a few seconds. Just long enough for me to get my badly damaged brain back in my head and realize that this next hit would be the end of me. I pulled my CRKT seahawk and slashed in a desparate move to strike flesh. Long story short. Later that evening we both went to the hospital me with a concussion. The low life with a nice long visit with a vasucular surgeon and I heard later he had to have a testicle removed. THe cops initally were pretty rough on us both but once they got the story straight I could have asked for the keys to the city and got them.

it all happened very fast and scary. my knife skills were pure luck. thank god i cut a tender spot of that now one balled *******.

You assume that the rules are the same everywhere. Here, how much trouble you can get into with a knife depends largely on the circumstances surrounding its use. For me though, I carry a knife as a tool because I also carry a gun. Knives as weapons scare me and if someone pulled a knife on me I would probably shoot them in the freakin' heart rather than get cut.

Fudo, I AGREE with you 100%, EXCEPT the use of the term "probably". I have a slightly different mindset, if someone pulled a knife on me, I WILL shoot them, no question, no hesitation, no exchange of small talk, no identification, no warning.......If the person with the knife has made a decision to stick it in my face, I am reasonably certain my life IS IN DANGER. So I PROBABLY will need a lawyer, but I CERTAINLY will SHOOT him......wolf

I had someone try to cut my throat with a Stanley knife about 10 years ago. I did not have a knife and luckily when I ran he was more drunk than I!

A few years ago a chap steped out of a dark alley and pulled a knife whilst asking for the beers I had just bought. I had been camping all day and still had my Ka-Bar knife on me, or was it a generic bowie? Anyway I pulled my coat back and half drew the knife and said @u%k you! He ran off.

I was in a pub a couple of years ago when some low life started giving me some agro. Turns out he has multiply convictions including drug abuse and violence. I stood up to him not knowing this and was about a second from drawing both my Gerber E-Z Outs on him. I walked away and went somewhere else. I felt rage over that but better look like a coward in you local pub than stab some low life? I thought that and I still do.

I would say a knife will only scare if you REALLY mean to USE it. Myself I will draw and use, if he sees the knife he may draw something bigger or WORSE. Keep the knife as the tool of last resort.
