Knives that you grew to love

It was the Benchmade Contego for me.

I didn't like it the first time I saw someone carrying it. I thought it was unnecessarily large and aggressive, and, there was too much going on in the handle shape for me.

Fast forward to now and I have one of my own. I love the blade size and shape. I still think the handle is strange, but, I respect it.

What knife did you eventually fall in love with?

Delica 4. At first the look of it was odd to me. The ergos didn't fit my hand as well as I liked. I did the one month challenge(carry the same knife everyday for a month) and now it's one of my favorite blades.

This may be surprising, but I wasn't sure if I liked my Spyderco GB and CRK Umnumzaan at first. The GB didn't feel right in my hand, but after getting used to it, I find it to be one of my most ergonomic folders. The Umnumzaan took some time to break in, but now it's perfect. Now they are easily in my top 5 knives.

The Spyderco Southard. When it came out I thought it was horrible looking. Thick blade. Baby-poop colored scale. Pointless stupid hole in the blade. Odd blade shape.

Then my wife bought me one as a gift, and I discovered I loved the thing. The odd looking blade had a great shape for actual use, and though it was too-thick at the spine it was a deep enough hollow grind to be quite thin behind the edge. I did still hate the scratchy brown scales, though, so I ended up getting a variety of awesome custom scales made for it. I have a pile of Southards now, all rocking different scales that I rotate through carrying.

I've since bought a pile of other knives, including some very expensive customs, that haven't managed to kick the Southard out of my pocket for any length of time.

Contego was one for me too. What eventually won me over was the M4 steel. It is some awesome stuff. Also, the PM2. I owned one for over a year and was underwhelmed by it. Finally, I made myself start carrying it, and it grew to be my go-to folder.

Buck Vantage for me. Previously I always thought the knife was a cheap knife with low grade steel, but after carrying it and really trying out all facets of its design I really think it's a winner in the budget department. Buck's 420hc outperformed my expectations so I'm about to pull the trigger on an S30V model as soon as I'm able.

Also, once I learned the reason behind Spyderco's designs I liked them a lot more. I don't think there's a company out there more dedicated to pushing the limits of cutting performance and overall function.

Spyderco Stretch for me. Also the Emerson CQC-7, I hated the grip at first. Gave it several unsuccessful tries in all 3 sizes, then suddenly it felt "right". Now I edc a Custom 7.

Kershaw Leek. I always LIKED it, but started carrying it more because it is a more civilized looking knife for an office environment.

I still prefer something like my Manix 2 for carry when I'm out of office, but I absolutely love the Leek. I really can't think of a better knife for this purpose.

My zt0350. At first it was heavy and i didnt care for the recurve. After i carried it and used it, i wouldnt trade it for anything.

Yall are going to find it funny. When i first took my dive out of the 8cr13 and aus 8 territory i went straight to a spyderco manix 2 lw s110v. Man when i received it i tought it was uglyer than in the pictures! But i carried it and just fell in love with the great ergos and the choil that let you choke up on the blade. Fast foward a year to now and half my knives are spyderco

After getting into knives on a hobby level I purchased my first Chris Reeve (several years ago) and coming from higher end Spydercos I didn't see much benefit in the extra cost. Well several years later and many Sebenzas later, they are the knife that all my other knives are compared to. Anytime I only carry one knife it's the large 21 CF Insingo. Glad I realized the beauty of such a simple knife, wish it had happened earlier though I would have saved some serious time and money. Oh well part of the fun I guess.
