Knives & Theme Parks

I'm planning to take the family to Orlando, Fl. It has been over a year since we've been to Disney or Universal Studios. I was wondering if it would OK to carry my pocket knives (a Chinook & SAK Champion) in these and other theme parks.
Has anyone out there (Floridians like myself especially) been to Disney lately? If so, were you allowed to bring in your EDC? Please let me know. I have carried a pocket knife/knives daily for years and I feel very, very uncomfortable when I don't have one with me.

This is one of the times it pays to call and check the parks
policy about knives. I understand some parks are really
parnoid and are confiscating knives from park visitors at
the gate. ( is that legal??) So if you plan to carry check
first.

Me, I figure that I've paid my money and the 2nd
amendment says I can bear arms ( no guns. Never win
that one) to provide and protect myself it's this way.......

No pocketknife.......No me & my money.

A lot of parks will search your bags, but now with the terrorism paranoia it wouldn't surprise me that they would check what you're carrying "on your person"

When I went to Disneyland out here in CA last year pre-9/11 they did not check.

On a recent visit to Universal Studios they didn't check either...

A recent visit to a major musuem in L.A. I was asked "Are you carrying any knives", but they didn't check to find out, and I didn't say yes

Your best bet would be to call ahead and find out.

L.A. Magic Mountian has metal detectors.

Please let us know about Disneyland.

I asked this very same question a few monhe ago. I too am planning a family trip back to Disney World. I was there last year in June and I carried my large Sebenza in every park and no one ever asked any questions but now since Sept. 11 I bet that they won't let them in. Please let us know what you find out. Thanks.

Legally, a private place can make any rules they like about what you can carry inside the park. However, it also increases their legal liability if anything should happen to you. You can inform them of this. Also, this would be a good time to perhaps invest in a knife such as the MT Option II. Slip it into your wallet and no one will be the wiser. Even if they have metal detectors the amount of metal in that knife should not set it off. If you can get through a metal detector with a belt buckle, necklaces, braces, rings and keys a knife that size is not much of a difference. Plan for it. Do not wear any rings or necklaces. Put your keys in the dish. If you want, don't wear a belt. If they have their detectors set so sensitive that it detects a knife that size, everyone and their brother is going to be stopped. I am not advocating this sort of thing for airports, but we are talking about Disneyworld here.

Now, FYI I believe that Disney theme parks are not "allowing" knives of any sort into their parks.

At our last family outing to Six Flags Kentucky kingdom , we wee metal detectored and had our fanny pac, and the wifes sling pack searched. We each carry SAK's , so i had to return them to the vehicle rather thatn bring them in the park. i brought back a plactic knife to quarter peaches with, and was told to throw it in the trash can, rather than take it in.
Good question about Disney though.. eldest son is taking his kiddo down there in June, and he'll need to know ahead of time

One2gofst got it right. An owner of private property, like amusement parks, sports venues, etc. can make any rules they want about what someone can bring in. That's the same way you would have the right to control what someone could bring into your house. The 2nd Amendment does not apply.

Unfortunately, I think we will be living with these restrictions for an indefinite period of time.:(

Man, what the hell is this world coming to? If I wanted a weapon, I think I would pick something a little more dangerous than a plastic knife--like...well...ANYTHING ELSE.

Just talked to my brother-in-law who went to Disneyworld (Orlando) post 9/11--he said there were bag checks and metal detectors. That was Christmastime last year so it's possible that it has changed since, but I doubt it.

Last year, I went to an art museum with an open carry FB. Security guard says "Sir, can you tuck you knife under your shirt?" and so I did. :D

They all have increased their "security protocols" and have installed metal detectors, hired additional security and added a manual full of prohibitted "items" that are not allowed onto THEIR property.

BUT, there is alot of "profiling" being done as it is impossible to search everyone all the time, and some actually apply common sense and discretion. If you "look" like a punk/terrorist/dirt-bag there is a very good chance you will be strip searched right at the front-gate of Disney World. If you "look" like the American family man, your chances drop dramatically. AND THIS IS WHAT THE PROBLEM IS!!!!

Things are going to get alot worse after the NEXT serious act of terrorism, and all the safeguards in place now will have had no impact on stopping it, just delaying it. For now, you just have to weigh each venue you are about to enter and decide if you should leave your knife in the car. Some places will deny entrance, some will "hold" your knife until you leave, and some places will size you up and if you do not fit the "profile", pay no attention.

IMHO, I say the odds are 50/50 that you can "carry" a knife in any theme park.......Ira

Just came home from NYC and Madison Square Garden, Saw the circus, and had to pass through security;) to get in. Anyone who wants to carry, will, and can, carry. I did, but I won't say how, if you are reasonbly intelligent you already have ideas. the only thing I'll add is whatever ya bring ya take the chance of having it confiscated, or having to bring it back to the car or room. :)

Sadly, "indefinite" will become "forever". I guarantee it.:(

The private property arguement banning weapons does not hold up if you think about it. These are public places, not private homes. You can't ban anything you want just because it is your property. How would people react if Disneyland said, "no blacks". It would be illegal discrimination. He would be violating their rights. Self defense, and the capability thereof, is a basic human right. If a person has private property used for a public purpose, he can't deny my rights just because I want to participate.

Think about it. Just because your on someone's property, does not give them free reign. Private property not used for a public purpose may be easier to justify the banning of weapons.

Self defense is a right.

Another thought on the same subject, every theme park you go to has a maintenance staff, security staff, & a housekeeping staff, coming from a maintenance background, I can assure you, for the most part they all carry knives. What gurantee do I have of their mental states? How do I know they're not gonna try to hurt me.

The argument I got once at 6 Flags Great Adventure was that they were tools not weapons, that their employees carried.

Bit of a double standard don't ya think?

Private property arguement does hold up for several reasons. The simplest of these is that when you visit a theme park you do not just pay money to a person at the gate. Rather you purchase a "revokable license". Read the back of any ticket next you purchase next time and you will see this phrase used. By purchasing and using the ticket you give the park the right to revoke your privledge to be there if you do not follow their rules. Maybe unjust, but it is legal.

I strongly agree with Tightwad. It seems that life, as we knew it is no more, however there are times that attempts at providing a safe environment only leave us as sheep in the wilderness.

Even before 9/11, I have carried a knife (or knives) with me on a daily basis. No theme parks, museums, aquariums, or any other public places are going to take that away from me. IT IS MY CHOICE WHETHER TO CARRY OR NOT.

What I'm trying to say is that if a theme park would go so far as to "pat me down" or ask if I carry, I would rather not spend my money there. Like Dave said, "Self defense is a right". Another point to think about is what if a knife is needed for an emergency purpose...what do you do if you don't have your knife?

Life has changed, but don't become a slave to "being safe".

I went to Disney World after Christmas. They searched all of the bags, but there were no metal detectors or personal searches. I didn't have a knife on me, but I am 99% sure that I could have carried one if I wanted to (I did have a sock full of pennies, though). I don't know about Universal or Sea World's policies on knives.
