Knives to invest in

"Knives; lousy investments, I buys 'em cause I loves 'em."

No truer words spoken...unless you buy when nobody's interested and sell at the height of the fad. Same goes for all investments. I missed my shot some time ago at selling my baseball card collection from 40 years ago.

the tin foil hat people always come out of the woodwork in batches dont they?

speculating is a dangerous game. knives do not, as a whole, have a history of increasing in value. yes there are a few makers, but your buck 110 is not going to be worth 60 dollars in 5 years.

if you want to gamble, take the bets that have the best odds with decent returns. Busse, special run Spydercos, etc. might be good bets but that is not the same thing as a good investment.

I keep it simple.

I approach my knife purchasing/trading by getting ones I like...and by getting ones that will at least hold their value.

Alot of times the same knife does both.

Not really into buying to sell for profit.

I have a 1 of 50 GEC that while limited numbered gets used for EDC with no thought as to resale. The beauty is in using it.

Limited Edition Busses are not the best investment if you are going to invest in Busse. They are at a premium to start with, your basic black combat grade model will increase in value more quickly.

The FBM which was released a couple of years ago, in basic black sold for $387, now they are selling in the $500-$550 region. That's about 12% a year since they were released. And some of these are selling in that price range after being used.

So are you going to be able to buy a Le Bushwacker and sell it in 2 years for $1200, no but if you buy a Bushwacker CG you should be able to sell it in a couple for an increased price. And you can have fun using it along the way. ;)

There is no guarantee of any of this but from years of watching the Busse market they increase more than many others I've seen.

There's something to be said for buying the one-offs also but that's a discussion for another thread ;)
:D:D

Yeah exactly. :)

All one has to do is look at the NMFBM LE, when it was released it cost $800 now they are worth $950~ $1000 or so.

The CG NMFBM was around $450 when released and now they go for $620 and up.

They both go up in value, but it takes longer for the LE's to increase and they will be worth much more in the long run than the CG models will percentage wise.

But yeah there ain't no way a BWM LE will be worth $1200 in 2 years. LOL

I don't have any experience with big $ knives. But I have sold a few less expensive knives on ebay for 50%+ more than I paid for them... Becker Brute, CS CV Trail Master, a couple I made a few bucks on... Bark River, Tops. All were lightly used, and all had handles I didn't care for (the price of living in the sticks, ordering sight unseen).

I have noticed rapid price jumps on discontinued knives (after the closeout discount phase). My $66 (new) Spyderco Dodo or $108 (new) Manix are now selling for a good bit more. The Benchmade Skirmish is another one, I missed out and now will pay a good bit more when I do get one. There is an element of timing involved, but the knives I buy that I like, I keep. My 2¢. :)
