Knives under $25 (help with Christmas gift ideas)

Now that Christmas is quickly approaching, I'm trying to come up with ideas for a few gift exchanges we do. Only guidelines: a guy gift, $25 limit. Knives and whiskey (sometimes wine) are my "go to" ideas because the guys in the exchange run the gamut of age (30s through 80s) and interests/hobbies.

Any suggestions for small folders under $25. No tacti-cool, black coated blades, etc. Simple is better...slipjoints, non-gimmicky multitools, etc. Any help is appreciated.

SAK's, Opinels. I don't know if they fall under your idea of tactical, but KaBar's Dozier lockbacks are great, sturdy knives, for dirt cheap prices.

Yep,SAK's,Opinels, and I'll add Mora's.You might possibly find some older USA knives at the pawn shop. You probably only want new but I wouldn't mind getting a well taken care of USA that looked new.

also:

Mercator K55
Douk Douk
Svord peasant knife
Okapi ratchet knife
Higonokami
Sodbuster

The KaBar Doziers for around 20 bucks are simply outstanding. The least expensive of the Buck Vantage series is a 25 buck knife that sure doesn't look or feel like it. (and made in the USA!).

Buck has some nice 301 single bladed Stockmen on their web special page for $20 or $22. Free shipping on $50, may be worth a look! That would be my first stop.

Haha, knives and whiskey; those are my kind of gifts :D

I second (third?) the SAK & Opinel recommendations. Alox pioneer or Farmer for around 25$, Opinel 8 for around 10$.

This forum is probably pretty much pre-selected for folks who have figured out some way of resharpening their knives. See if you can include with the knife one of the cheap and cheerful sharpeners that seem to float around. These will not produce a shaving sharp edge - but may well be more appreciated than the knife it's self as the person who gets one goes thru a kitchen drawer full of the most incredibly dull chumks of steel that anyone has ever encountered.

Hands down the Victorinox Alox Cadet. It's a basic 2-layer 84mm model that has a single large blade, nail file, and cap lifter and can opener with screwdriver ends. Thin, light, it disappears in the pocket, but is very capable. The Alox (aluminum) scales make it a classier gift than the plastic-handle models. If you look around you can find versions with color anodized scales which look pretty good. I've seen them as cheap as $15.

There are other Alox models available as well.

If you can find them for your price point, the Leatherman Squirt with pliers is a great pocket tool. I have the older P4, which has been replaced by the PS4. I prefer the tool combo on the P4, but would carry either.

Mine rides on my keychain, and for a long time it replaced my Victorinox Pioneer. The pliers made the difference in utility.

Definately Swiss Army Alox models. The Pioneer can be had for $20 - $25 online. The blade on this line of Alox knives is thicker and the spring is stronger than other Swiss Army knives, making this a great option for a robust gentleman's knife.

Spyderco's new Stainless Steel Kiwi Slip-it

I bought a few for Christmas and birthday gifts for around $17 shipped and it comes in a beautiful small box.

I've bought a number of Boker Magnums designed by Daywalker/Chad Los Banos for myself and others for less than that price - they've been useful and well-received.

Under $20 delivered:

Useful and simple (brilliant IMHO) Buck 486. Sharp and pointy 420HC stainless blade. Thumb stud opener. Deep carry pocket clip. Lined lanyard hole. Anatomical/safety grip (FRN) that is comfortable in forward and reverse grip. Lite weight yet full-sized. Back lock. Forever warranty. Something they might actually enjoy using. My EDC is a buck 486 (orange B&C variant).
