Recommendation? Knives vs. the Sea

I like the less expensive knives option, especially a small fixed blade, maybe a Mora, and either the Demo knife, SA, or an Opinel. I have heard of some people when they traveled to Africa, etc, where they left the knives with the locals who had helped them. Maybe do that and someone may help you find that one of a kind souvenir knife. Maybe a locally made one the people use there. Let us know what you take and we want to hear about your adventures. I did a quick search and there is one called a Canary Island Knife that is made for Abrago Menswear. Looks like a Cool Spanish variety, costs over 200.00. Just do a quick search for the knife and you may see it. Just a thought.

I’ve had Spyderco H1 submerged in saltwater probably 60-70 times for hours over the years. Never one spec of corrosion, and sharpens incredibly easy.

Spyderco's LC200n, high end dive knives are made from titanium, but if you want to own the gold class, check out BETA Titanium

Interesting. What % Ti does Sal put in his dive knives?

I can't speak about Titanium knives but, as an Optician, I do know a little about titanium eyewear. Beta Titanium frames are supposed to be 75% titanium and 25% blended alloys.

I can also tell you that a two-year saltwater test has been done on pure titanium with zero corrosion damage. When it comes to metal eyewear, Ti frames are the bomb. I can only imagine what a Ti knife is like.

Meh. Whatever you take isn’t going to rust away to nothing. Just take what you like, wash it when you get out of the briny deep, dry it, throw some oil on it, put it away and don’t worry about it.

Even carbon steel won’t look like a rust and barnacle encrusted anchor at the end of a day - just maintain it and you’ll be fine.

I take my least expensive knives with me when I travel. Lost luggage etc.

My Kershaw Launch 8 in cpm-154 had no troubles in Galveston TX, neither did my Vic Super Tinker. I wasn't swimming with them though.

However, the August humidity is pretty ridiculous down there, along with the heavy salt air.

I would get a little Spyderco dragonfly salt for a folder personally. Not too expensive, it is a great small knife.

Eventually, I got the White River Knives FC4 I posted about earlier. After reading up on the knife laws it's clear to me I won't be taking any knife to the beach, or club, but I will be doing some hiking and such and it will come with me. Also, the place I rented is apparently very very basic, so I think it'll help me around the kitchen. I also like that I could easily reverse the sheath for left-handed carry. It seems like the kind of knife that I will be enjoying for more than one trip.

This will be the most expensive knife I'll take on this trip. Other than that, I'll take a SAK (Vic Huntsman) and an opinel stainless. I'm still debating on whether I'll take a small axe and folding saw. I do like whittling though. I think I'll see if there is any space left in my pack while packing.

I think this combo strikes a nice balance between my needs and also the cost involved. I've saved up a little money so if I come across a great knife there, I can still buy it. I'm not sure what to expect, but it might be fun to hunt around a bit.

I've also looked at the Canary Island knife cbach8tw cbach8tw mentioned. I'm gonna see if I can find anything about it there, but I think I might be on the wrong island. We'll see.

I've also very much enjoyed checking out the other recommendations in this thread and a lot of them have made it to my wishlist.

I concede that the combination of spanish knife laws as well as my own strange tastes have narrowed my selection down in a strange direction, but I am very glad with this thread and I hope it will be a resource for others in the future. With that in mind, do feel free to keep recommending good knives for travels near the sea.

All that remains is to once again thank you all for your suggestions and input! It really helped me out!

Adventure awaits!! Please let us know how it goes. Traveling really does broaden the mind.

SAK. :D
Very corrosion resistant and easy to sharpen on field. Multiple functions.
Try to spend less time thinking about stuff and enjoy the vacation.
