No, not the pro's and con's:D I've already decided that I like 'em:p I'm just wondering if there are any out there that I'm not familiar with? I'm jonesing for a new summer knife, and I'm contemplating a Blackjack 1-7 or Sog Bowie, but I'm wondering if there isn't something out there a bit more woods-oriented than either of those. I am familiar with the Falkniven Northern Lights series, but they're a bit more than I can afford to spend (and I'd prefer something in carbon steel if available).

Some classic Marbles would work.

Rapid River knives (former Marbles folks) have some nice custom stuff.

Ka-Bar has some very affordable leather handled knives.

Mike Malosh of Chaser knives does some nice work with stacked leather and antler.

how about the tried and true trusty ka-bar?

Shoulda' mentioned that one, but I do have one:thumbup: The size is perfect for me, and really like the weight-utility ratio, but I'd like something maybe a little more stout, and with a better grind and no fuller. Not that there's anything wrong with the Ka-bar as-is, it's just not optimal for me. I put a lot of miles on my Ontario version as a kid, and probably still would if I hadn't buggered the handle attempting to do a hot-wax treatment after reshaping the handle:thumbup:

MORE stout than a Ka-bar?

ok, then. :)

Yeah:o I just find the Kabar a little lean for that length:foot: Pound-for-pound it's a champ, I'm just looking for a something in a higher weight class;)

Marcelo, that link of yours was almost too much:p That second bowie down is almost exactly what I want, just a little pricier than I can swing this year. I should just get off my butt and make myself something, but...:D

I have a strong bias in favor of the 12 inch Himalayan Imports AK, villager. Not sure what you are going to do. (actually, not sure I WANT to know. :) ) Check the HI forums, or their website.

Walter, just make one! They do take more time but if you're doing it for yourself, it would be worth it.

i wonder about the israeli commando knife, myself. it looks stouter than the kabar, but i've never handled one.

I myself think the SOG is "woods" oriented! GOD Bless BRO!! (Super Bowie weighs in at almost 18 oz.)

You can always dig around the 'bay for a vintage leather-handled Collins. They tend to fetch hefty prices these days, but they're NICE.

(sorry for the crappy picture)

I've got one:p I'm just thinking maybe something new this summer:thumbup:

Actually, the Super Bowie is pretty impressive-at it's size I'd like it to be a little more blade heavy, but I'm pretty happy with mine as is!

Stingray, that Puukko is a little smaller than I like, but those are all some good looking knives! Thanks a ton for that link:D

I think leather makes a good feeling grip. The only drawback is a climate that is not leather friendly.

I'm a big fan of the older trailguide with stacked leather handles from Blackjack. I also have the Blackjack No 1 in stacked leather. Both have the high carbon blades and are razor sharp. Warm in the hand. I like leather.

What you need is a good ol' Marble's! They are quite affordable and mine have all performed very well. The sheaths are kind of crappy, though.

Here's one of my favourite hunting blades:

Another thing you can do is take a beat-up old CS Trailmaster and rehandle it. Gene had one redone by Bark River. It was sweet! They thinned the edge too much but otherwise I was all-a-covetous.

I often carry a leather stacked handle while wood bumming. I've never had any problems, even when I never did any regular maintenance to the handle (although I apply a little wax now).
