Knives you have and don't like

all of the ontario rat series except the rat 3.... the rest of them have the worst heat treat i have ever seen, bad handle design and etc etc, however i love my rat 3.

I bought it brand new with high expectations. It showed up impossible to open, and tough to close.. BEYOND what are considered normal perameters. I disassembled it, and it had some sort of green gunk on it. Basically, out of the box, it was not ready for use. And for over $300-... I shouldn't have to clean it over and over again and lube it for it to be good enough to use.

Where did you buy it, if you don't mind my asking ?

Thanks

The two knives on my list are actually good knives - I just hadn't ever found a good practical use for them for me personally. They have pretty much stayed on the shelf, and I don't buy knives generally to just look at. They include a USAF Survival knife made by Ontario. I'm sure its great for downed military pilots - - very stout & thick, but too thick a blade and profile for me to do the kind of general camp chores that I want. Saw teeth that I'm sure do their intended job of cutting through an airplane canopy, but they aren't very good for cutting wood. - - The second knife is a Cold Steel Gurkha Kukri. Beautiful looking knife. Came very sharp from the factory. Its a little too sharp IMO for some of the axe and machette tasks that I do around a camp. Sticks in the wood. It's probably perfect for lopping off things in battle, but I don't really have a need for that. So in both cases these were a mis-match for me. Ive had them for quite awhile. I'll keep them because they are nice knives, however. Best regards, - -

Tom Brown Tracker. I bought it because I thought I was getting a production version of the Beck Knife, and it fell far short of my expectations. I bought a Swamp Rat Knife works "Camp Tramp" to replace it, and am very happy with that.. The "Tracker" just doesn't do it for me, although many people seem to like it.

For me they are my gerber paraframe and a BudK USMC combat kukri. I cant get the gerber sharp at all. And the kukri's handl came loose and the black coating started comming off the day i got it. Thank god it was cheap.

Vivi... the SP1 is full tang, isn't it? good info there as i actually considered that knife or a similar Ontario one before. actually it may have been the spec plus USN1 or something like that, but something about the knife wasn't sitting well with me when i looked at it, so it's interesting to hear your experience

Not 100% certain but I believe they are. I'd rather spend the money on a Mora and a hatchet and then go buy myself a good lunch. This knife didn't excel at cutting or chopping, it was just a so-so in between sort of knife. I have another knife of similar size from Brusletto but it cuts just as well as a small mora (Tires you out a little sooner due to negotiating the blade weight) and chops better too, despite weighing less than the Ontario.

This one. Can't explain why, it just doesn't do it for me. Too bad, I was excited to take it in trade.
Its a Stag Handled Damascus Upswept Skinner...

Trade you the Ontario for it. Even throw in an Opinel :D

I'm eye balling it now, the death of my bank account:eek:

Bought it through the post direct from Germany a Böker Walker folder:barf:
What a mistake and EXPENSIVE:(

Green wood scales look OK but the finish would put a cheap Chinese folder to shame! Rough edges, and as for the lock....if you want to go digitless well OK.
Frankly a disgrace and wondering if Germany makes ANY decent knives these days. Curiously, The Böker Magnum Bullfog(Chinese)is a much better made knife, a nice compact fatty with a good quality/price ratio and feels overall alright.

The Böker Walker costs the same as a Mcusta basic but there the comparison ends, the Japanese knife is excellently made and a joy to carry. Offers for this Böker anyone:rolleyes:

i was hoping this thread would allow us all to therapeutically vent about our regrets. i hope it's not making anybody depressed! sorry to hear about the boker, willgoy. it sounds like it was expensive :(

The one I want to get rid of is the S&W HRT9B boot knife. I don't even know why I bought this.

Unfortunately, they are hard to get rid of, except maybe on Ebay.

Sog Seal 2000. I hate the handle and the blade won't take a good enough edge. I finally just gave up on it and threw it in a box somewhere.

I'd go with 2 that I purchased when I first started collecting... a Benchmade Pika- blade play sucks and the handle is cheap and poorly designed. And the Camilus Cuda CQCJR- handle is way too skinny and difficult to grip. Ugh.

When I first got into knife collecting, I made the same mistake most new collectors make. I bought El-Cheapos that looked good. I knew nothing about the various types of blade steels, heat treatment, ergonomic handles, etc.

I regret having bought them, but they were made to a price-point. Had a few from the early days that should have been better. A Buck model 112 that never should have left the factory because of its poorly fitted lock. A Camillus Pilot Survival knife that wasn't properly heat-treated.... took me awhile trying to re-sharpen it to realize that.

The worst one was a Custom made Reese Wyland folder that was designed by a knife dealer aquaintence, based on my concept. It was supposed to be a clip point, frame lock knife; about the size of the CRKT Kasper Fighter. The agreed upon price was $400.oo

When the knife was shipped to the knife dealer, he told me to prepare to be a bit disappointed. It arrived the same size as a Spyderco Delica! The only reason I payed the knife dealer the $400.oo is because I gave him my word that I would. The lock was also far too easy to disengage. To this day, I have no clue why Mr. Wyland decided to make a much smaller knife than agreed upon.
