Knives You Like With Features You Don’t

Just something I noticed with my Kershaw rescue knife. I like the knife. It sharpens easily and gets super sharp. The hollow grind is great. The edge is thin. But it has some features that would normally stop me from buying one. This one was a gift.

The seat belt cutter isn’t something I would get but it doesn’t really get in the way. One day it might come in handy.

The pocket clip is small and somewhat difficult to use. It’s positioned oddly and pulling the knife from my pocket will often get the thumb stud caught on the edge pocket. It’s also top down only. I’ve only carried it a few times but it odds growing on me. These items don’t overshadow the blade shape and sharpness enough to leave it at home but it’s change them off I could.

I have a Buck 112 slim select that I really like, except for the pocket clip. The clip is really wide, and one time while really bearing down on the knife while making a cut the clip created an awful Hotspot on my hand. I decided to remove the clip and make it a regualr pocket carry, and I like it better this way. I am going to get a 110 slim select and try the same thing. I am thinking it may ride in the pocket a little better than the 110 LT

Lockbacks, and axis type locks. Lockbacks because I cannot close them one-handed, which has become a must for me, and axis/crossbar type locks because they’re just not comfortable for me to use. I only had one of the former (a Buck 112 Ranger Sport) and subsequently sold it; I had a bunch of the latter and sold most of them as well. I kept a Hogue Deka because I otherwise really like that knife, and because I spent a fortune on custom scales for it.

My Spartan Harsey Folder is quite possibly my favourite knife ever, but it’s on the verge of being too small for my (admittedly enormous) hand. If I could stretch it out to an overall length of 10 inches, we’re talking holy grail status.
Really? We're all going to let this go? I guess I'm the only middle schooler here 🤣

Joking aside, I am a huge fan of Winkler Knives in general, both the company and the designs. However, I'm not a fan of the steel. It's my understanding that 80CrV2 is used because it works well and allows everything, including heat treat, to be done in-house (I could be wrong). It does perform well. I have several knives and I have never had an issue with the performance. The problem is I can't look at it for too long without it rusting. I think there are several steel options that would perform as well or better with better corrossion resistance. Cruwear, 3v, and AEB-L to name a few. It seems like lots of knifemakers heat treat AEB-L in house. That seems like the most logical option. I admitedly know very little about knifemaking so I'm probably wrong. I still love my Winklers! It's probably best for my wallet that he sticks to 80CrV2 or I'd have to buy all of them.

Protech Malibu. That clip digs into my hand very uncomfortably. I'd like the knife to be a little longer too.

My current primary EDC Kershaw Concierge. Don't like the tip-up carry. And the recessed belt clip is tedious to get over even quite thin pocket edges.

Thumb hole to open. I have a Spyderco Endura. I do like be build quality, but the thumb hole is kind of awkward to pocket.

4 of my all time favorite knives, the Koenig Arius, Arno Bernard iMamba, Grimsmo Norseman and Hawk Talon all share this... no moving the clip for lefty carry. I can operate the locks fine, but let me carry them properly dammit!

Every time I see a cool front flipper, I get interested, and then I see that its a front flipper. Happened with 3 or 4 Metal complex videos on youtube in the last few months.

Yes - front flippers not good. I have a WE Black Void Opus that I tolerate because it’s an otherwise beautiful knife, but it’s a lesson in cursing trying to open it.
