Knives you used in Boy Scouts

I was in the Boy Scouts back in the 70´ and always used my Kabar and my army mess kit.. Still have both

Outside the U.S., a shortish sheath knife with a guard is a "Scout Knife." While the Woodcraft pattern was hugely popular before WWII, that was clearly not the case there after. Millions of surplus knives flooded the market. We could buy a MK I with a sheath for $1.00 in the 1950's. MK II's were $1.50.
Want pictures of euro Scout knives?

I cut my finger up pretty badly with an Imperial. The gash is still there staring back at me.

I was in cubs we didn't have many troops around. I remember the pine wood durby had about 20 scouts. Most troops were 4-5 kids. Anyways I had me a Buck 110 and an old KampKing.

I was never in the scouts. Although I did own the scout handbook, which is now long lost. There is a lot of good info in it. I should buy another copy at some point.

If I were a kid now going into scouts I would probably want a Leatherman tool. Back “in the day” I probably would have wanted a Buck lockback of some sort.

Pretty sure I carried the same Ulster that my dad carried when he was a scout in the '40s. Still have it.

That would have been the original Ulster - Dwight Devine. They went under in 1940, but their knives went on in use, especially since knives for civilians largely dried up during the war and the military started the war with trivial stock to issue to its personnel. A few PALs were made for BSA in 1941 after PAL bought the Remington equipment and customer list. One of my uncles took his Ulster to war. Another took his Remington sheath knife.

Had the standard issue "official" scout knife. Whatever that was. That was a LONG time ago, but I seem to remember it looking like this.
May have also had the cub scout version.

Just like mine, rust and discoloration were common with mine anyway and with yours I see. I never had a descent edge on it and used it mostly for whittling.

Outside USA most scouts used Marbles style fixeds

Thats something of a blanket statement - what do you base that on?

Im not even doubting your statement per se - its just that I have no empirical data in regards to Scout organisation knives in the Republic of Upper Volta, Russia, India, Kazakhstan, Germany, France etc etc.

Brusletto BTW.

In Nordic countries, Scouts used knives traditional in those areas. Guards got put on later - the curse of modernity and law suits.

This thread got me thinking....
I know I have my old scout knife .... somewhere..... but it is not in any of the places it should be. I know I had the thing about three moves ago.....

A few days later, I am out in the SUV, digging around in a storage compartment looking for something, and I find an old ugly knife that has probably been hiding in the truck for over 10 years:
View media item 2230Because of this thread, I decide to clean it up, and after a bit of work with rubbing alcohol, barkeeper's friend, and some elbow grease, we have this:
View media item 2231The above is the first knife I ever purchased with my own money over thirty years ago when in scouts at a week long summer camp somewhere on the east coast. I even have my initials scratched into one of the end caps. It is a bit the worse for wear, even after the cleanup, but it is still able to take an edge, as I can attest. Right before taking the 'after' pic, I saw something on the blade and decided to wipe it off with a napkin.... The napkin did wipe up the shmutz . . . and the blood from where I sliced my finger open on the freshly sharpened edge (oh, bother).... I took the pic while I bled into a paper towel and my wife grabbed the first aid kit from the closet. My wife helped me bandage up my finger, laughing the entire time... sigh...

Enjoy an old, beat up knife and its old beat up (and freshly bandaged) owner.
