Knot Suggestion Needed

I am frequently tying off a load with a rope that is too long for the need and I don't want to cut the rope. I tie one end and then cross over the load as needed and then need to tie it off and have 5 or 10 feet of rope to work with. What is a good knot where you don't have to use the end of the rope to tie it?

I've learned the Highwayman's hitch which seems similar to one I've seen my Dad tie but it is not as secure, not real easy to tie and keep the line taut, and will slip unless it is next to the hitching point. I'd ask Dad but I lose my chance back in 1984!

Any suggestions? I hope I've made my question understandable.

Thanks,
Paul

I can see where the Sheepshank is a good idea, especially with hemp rope. I see that it can come undone using nylon rope.

Thanks,

Monkey Chain may be the way to go. That article has a video I made on how to tie it.
Yep. We call that the Daisy Chain. I tie that in line or webbing, and then tuck it in or under somewhere to keep it out of the way.

And depending on the knot to be used and what is being secured, sometimes I'll just put a bight in the rope and tie whatever knot with the bight leading the way. I'm not quite sure how else to explain that one.

I'll look into the monkey/daisy chain - had not thought of that.

By bight (blight?) do you mean a tied loop in the rope to run the end back though to take up the extra length by doubling the rope back on itself?

The two half hitches with or without a turn is my staple. Its the one I remember best from scouting days. However, it is a pain when you have a lot of extra rope!

I've used it with nylon and poly ropes with an extra half hitch around each loop. Held fine.

Oh man, I hate cutting a good rope!

Make a large bight (i.e double the rope over) or maybe even double bight. Then daisychain or a series of half-hitches. It is better to make the half hitches loose, they use more rope and are easier to untie.
