Know of a company that will make a one-off knife based on my own design?

After lots of years in the woods, and countless hours of dirt time with many different types and styles of knives, I have a pretty good understanding of what works/doesn't work for me. I own a bunch of knives - and several of them fit my needs very well - but I wanted to take a stab (no pun intended) at bundling up all my ideal qualities and turning that into steel. I have neither the skills nor tools to accomplish that though, so I need to farm it out to someone who does. I looked high and low to find a company offering such a service, and after some time came across Battle Horse Knives. They do have a "we'll build your design' program, but trying to get anything from those folks has proven to be an exercise in futility; think along the lines of the Three Stooges running a government program and you begin to get a sense of what it's been like. The short of it is the first version they sent me had a handle that must have been from another customers design, because for sure it was nothing like we had agreed on. That was immediately sent back. I've been waiting for the replacement for 4 1/2 months now, but there's no end in sight. Frankly I've just grown tired of the nonsenses and BS answers (when I can actually get an answer from them that is). I've given up on BHK but I haven't given up on my quest to make this happen, and that's where I need a little help...

Does anyone know of a quality knife maker who is reliable that can take someone's design and produce a single knife? It can be a big shop along the lines of Tops or a small outfit working from a garage. I don't care either way, so long as they do good work and I can count on them. I've checked the Custom and Handmade subforum but unfortunately I don't know enough about those folks to understand whose who. Materials are pretty standard, so I'm not looking for some elaborate/expensive knife. Perhaps 01 or A2 - 52100 even, since I've never owned a knife using that steel - and micarta scales with a Kydex sheath; no fancy steels or bizarre grinds, no exotic woods or unusual handle contours, no intricate leather work. I have all the spec's and complete dimensions, I just don't have a way of getting it made.

Try JK Handmade on this forum. He is a great guy and good to work with.

I would find a KnifeMaker here and see how you like there work and ask them. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php/767-KnifeMaker-s-Market-Knives-amp-More-for-Sale

This is really the best way to go.

A lot of quality guys that do excellent work and have made knives for me to my specs...

Just contact whoever's work best seems to fit the style of knife you want, and see where it goes.

Remember that these guys may have a waiting list, might not be taking custom orders right now, or may not be able to work with or even feel comfortable doing some of the things you may want.

Be patient...

For a minute there I thought you had found me a gold mine! I followed that link and saw a subforum called "Wanted: Knifemaker / Craftsman / Related Services". The description had me even more excited; Have a knife design you want built? Heat treating needs? Damascus Desires? Embellishment Enquiries? Creative Customization Curiosity? This is your place to solicit work. Anyone can post threads, however ONLY KnifeMaker / Craftsman / Materials Providers may reply to threads. Perfect!

Alas, there's not a single thread or post there. It seems highly unlikely I would be the first person wanting to have his own design made, but if that forum is any indication I may have entered the Twilight Zone. :D Maybe I'll peruse The Custom Shop area and see if anything looks promising. It seems I can't post there, so that limits its effectiveness for me.

LT Wright Knives will do that work for you. There may be some limits to what he will make you, but his work is nice. He is one of the former Blind Horse Knives founders.

Edited to add that I didnt read all of your post before replying. LT is the other half of Blind horse before it broke up. I had him make me a custom tweaked version of one of his production knives and is was exsctly as I speced it out.

You can't see any posts because you're not a knifemaker level member. If you post there, only you and the knifemakers will see your post.
Go ahead and give it a try and see who bites on your design.

Also look up Brian Efros knives.

JK handmade makes nice stuff. So does Ben Tendick on the forums

Interesting story; in my "blades to check out" file are links to his Scout Jr and Mud Turtle. The former seems to have been discontinued, but the latter is still up on the website. Maybe I'll reach out to him. Thanks for the tip.

If they left on good terms that might get a bit awkward, given how poorly I think of BHK. But if they hate each others guts this might be the first stop I make! :p

I don't have a Post New Thread button when I go into that subforum though, so I can't add anything unfortunately.

Alan Davis here on the forums is the man for the job. He has done a few for me and they were all Great!
Good Luck! Kevin 👍😊

I believe his motto is "My design or yours". He makes to people's specification pretty regularly I think. I'm not sure what your parameters are and he does have size limitations, but can make a pretty big knife. I received a Rule #9 from him today, a design that was created by another member on the forum.

Many others mentioned are also excellent.
