Being new to the world of HI Khukuris and having made my first purchase. I have a couple of questions for those in the know.

Is the Kobra a historical pattern or modern? Could someone give me a little background on it, what are the pros and cons of this style Khukuris?

Sorry for these questions but Im excited about my first purchase here.

The Kobra was designed by Kumar. The historians can tell us if ever there was another khuk design similar.

Don't cut down any trees with it. It is designed for Martial arts, self defense, shrub wacking, snake wacking. There is not the extra forward weight of the other designs to enable good cutting. It is quick.

The very first Kumar Kobra was made from an old worn out file, still had the hatchmarks. I'm sure that the original was made in the last four years or less, so it's a modern design.
Munk has told the rest. The Kobra is a lightweight khukuri for lightweight tasks as a few people have discovered. I'm pretty sure that's why the 30" Kobra isn't made anymore. It was more sword like than khukuri and just wasn't up to what some people tried to use them for.:(
The Kobra is a good martial arts khuk but sometimes a Chainpuri, Chitlangi, or even a Sirupate will come in at less weight for its size. Such khuks aren't good for heavy or even most medium work either.
The Chitlangi with its double fuller's will be a stronger blade inch for inch.:D
I have one small Kobra, bought it on a whim one day when the HIKV was strong and the price was good.
I prefer the fat bellied khuks like the BGRS, Foxy Folly, AK, and other similar khuks.:D

Thanks guys, I have a couple more traditional Kukris (not from HI) and have done some pretty heavy chopping with them. I liked the longer more sword like profile of the Kobra, it has more of the look of a weapon and less a tool. This looks more like a cutter and less of a chopper. any other info would be great, cann't wait to get my package.

I think you'll really dig the kobra. They're a whole different breed than the beefy choppers. Munk and Yvsa are correct, the kobra is not going to win in any chopping contests. Also, i believe that they are not covered by the lifetime unconditional warranty that the thicker khuks have. However, the kobra, in my own personal experiences, is tougher than others let them on to be. You have to remember that the cantina (HI forum) is huge subterranean system of caves inhabited by 9' tall monsters with paws the size of frying pans and teeth like daggers. Most of the men here could easily snap a 5/16" blade like a pencil between their thumb and palm. I believe that forumite Nasty uses a 25" kobra to pick the bits of flesh of intruders from his teeth. They are monsters I tell you!;) In all seriousness, i wouldn't chop down a tree with any kobra. I don't think its so much a problem with the blade failing as much as a person's technique getting sloppy as their hands fatigue from using a tool not designed for that task. Once that happens you're more likely to strike at an angle and warp the blade. If you have a bigger and heavier kobra, then you can sometimes get away with more abuse. I know that my 25" kobra saved me a lot of work when a tree tumbled over and blocked me in at my mother's house in July. Its all i had, but it served me well in getting the driveway clear enough for me to get out. Long story short, i think you're really gonna dig the kobra:D

I guess I'm thinking of it more as a sword and less of a wood working tool. I wouldn't use my saber to chop into trees so I don't think I'll have a problem with the Kobra if I want to do some serious chopping I have a bearded axe sitting right next to my computer. I am really looking foreward to getting it.

They are a beautiful design for a weapon, but as has been noted, *I* am too clumsy and ham-handed for them. I have found the Tarwar (a very beefy short sword) better suited to *my* abuse. I often wish that I could trust myself with a Kobra...but alas...

Just my own humble opinion but it seems ANYTHING khuk wise over about 20 inches is overly heavy on the front end. I got a 25" kobra and it feels quite unweildy to me.

that kobra will probably be pretty responsive in your hand. I bet you can "feel" what it can and cant do pretty quickly.
Any of them will fight, but not all of them can cut down a sequoia.
Be safe and have fun.

Maybe you just need to get them to make a BIGGER Kobra for you Nasty.

I've got one of those...it's called a 25" Sirupati! :D

Not that I'll ever need it but is this true?

I think this is true. I figure as long as you don't go cutting trees with it, you're probably ok. It's best to check with Uncle Bill though.

I figure that you'd be covered for broken tangs and such though.

That's a good point about the tang, Bruise. And since the Kobra is martial in design, we need to know about how many breast plates, ribs, arms, livers, the usual stomach evisceration, and assorted parts the blade can pass through before voiding it's warranty?

I haven't had to disembowel anyone in a couple of days. However, it's good to know that if I broke a tang in battle it would be under warantee.

i like tang.
