I saw these Kodiak Firestarters at a recent show and was very impressed with how well thought out they were. They incorporate a large magnesium rod, firesteel, paracord with striker, compass, and thermometer all into a stout wooden handle. The firesteel is one of the ones that is harder than the other ones I sell, so it is easier to use, but the sparks do not last quite as long. They still work great for any tinder I could find, especially when used in conjunction with the massive magnesium rod.

So that's what a storl sounds like. :D

Need any more book titles? Got some new ones. :D

You mentioned putting magnesium on duct tape if it's windy out. A natural substitute would be pine pitch or spruce gum. As well as keeping the magnesium from blowing away, the pitch/gum/resin is also very flammable.

thats hilariously big :D

Yeah, it's pretty massive, which is where I'm guessing the lifetime replacement warranty comes from. They figure you will never, ever use it up.

Doc, I'm still working on the ten million titles you already gave me. :o

Looks like a neat tool. Thanks for the review.

The size is a bit of an issue for me. If the goal is to have a large firesteel / mag block combo, I wonder if a folding handle might be more efficient, from a storage perspective.

Come to think of it, the size might make this a good piece of gear for novice users, with the idea that they could scale down (and possibly drop the magnesium) once they have become familiar with the basics.

All the best,

Storl, have an idea for you buddy..'Fire Tape'

If you can unroll 10m or so of 1" duct tape, sprinkle magnesium powder on it leaving about 1/8 free from each side to seal it up somewhat, re-roll and sell it as a tinder product. I would make it myself here but its really hard to find Mg to work with.

For you guys that like your winter camping and hiking, I can see where that big size has its benefits. Holding a 3/8ths rod with a big ole mitten on is not that easy.....

You have been adding some neat new things. This one is handy. I agree with Tony, would work well with gloves/mittens.
