Kodiak PA, a.k.a. Greg Mete, I count him a friend for a long time now, going on at least three years we've talked, emailed and passed things back and forth. One of the traditions that we both adhere to is the old superstition of giving a coin to the person donating or giving a knife so as not to sever the friendship, recently I had sent him a knife and today received not just a coin but something of an award that he had received in November of 1991 from the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard, here is what he wrote;
This medallon coin was presented to me by the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard in November 1991 when I helped rescue and treat several hundred Haitian refugees that were trying to escape Haiti and make it to the United States. We had, in just two patrols nearly 5,000 people that we interdicted. I was the only medical person onboard to treat all of the sick and injured. The Master Chief gave me this coin as a token of his appreciation. The MCPOCG is given just several hundred of these coins to give out during is four-year tenure so they are quite rare...I value you and your friendship so I would like you to have this very special momento of a very trying time in my life. I hope you like it, when you look at his coin, think of our friendship.
Your friend,
Greg Mete,

Here is a scan of both sides of the coin, I propped up the coin with the plastic so it would scan better...Thanks Greg, I'll always treasure this!

Thanks for posting this Gary. I am also fortunate to call Greg my friend. The fact that he received the coin for meritorious duty above and beyond doesn't surprise me, that's what he's made of. That he would send it to you speaks volumes of what he thinks of you too.
Here's to 2 of the good guys!

Dave

Nice work fella's! I really love seeing gestures such as this in today's world where traditions and values are somewhat less important than they used to be. You two definitely help make BFC a better place. Health and happiness to you both during the upcoming year.

I'll second that; Greg's a pleasure to deal with. He purchased a Buckmaster knife from me a while back, and of course was prompt with his payment. The knife, which he rightly assumed would contain the anchor pins, didn't have them -- because I'd removed them ages ago and stuck them in a tackle box before forgetting all about them. When he mentioned the oversight I offered to refund him part of his money, and he declined. I've traded or sold to several different people on BFC, and while they were all great folks, Greg's among the best of them.
