I am really getting frustrated with these people. Who else can I deal with for some basic supplies? Koval is just a few miles from my house which is good, because I am finding them to be more and more curt or simply indifferent when I telephone them.

If I buy what they have to sell me without asking many technical questions, they are just fine. Other than that, it is no fun.

What other suppliers are there who can take the time to explain things to an amateur, or just have a better customer-service orientation?

Thanks,

Sam

Unfortunately, I've had the same experience as you with Koval. The first time I ordered, they put half of it on back order, 3 weeks later I called and it was still on back order so I changed my order. The second time, they didn't have any of the stuff I wanted, so I completely re did my order. And I have trouble getting a salesperson on the phone since I'm not home much during the hours they're open.
I have heard a lot of good things about jantz supply - www.jantzsupply.com
And halpern titanium seems to get a lot of praise. Good luck.

Fix it right the first time, use Baling Wire !

Jim over at Texas Knifemakers Supply is a maker himself, and is usually great at the customer service thing, but not the cheapest of the big 5 suppliers.

You can try;

Knife and Gun finishing supply, 520-537-8877
Jantz supply 800-351-8900
Sheffields 904-774-5754
Texas Knifemakers Supply 713-461-8632
Koval 614-855-0777

Just remember, they are in the supply selling buisness, not the advice dispensing biz. If you get to talk to somebody besides a secretary, and they answer a question or two, consider yourself lucky.

im still waiting on a piece of percesion grd o-1 that i ordered before thanksgiving they waited over a week before they sent me they rest of my order that is the last time i order from them i have had good service from all the other companys i do a lot of business with jantz supply being right here in okla i always get my order the next day

Thanks guys, that helps. I'll try each one of these places. I just wish they were as convenient, geographically, as Koval. It's too bad, really. Now I have to incur shipping charges and several days delivery delay, when good service could be just around the corner.

Sam,
I've been using Sheffield Knifemakers Supply for many years and no complaints. They stock a good amount of stuff.

K&G has always been real helpful over the phone and delivery time has always been prompt even to Maui, HI. Tru-Grit is also really good. Both places class acts.

You must live in calling distance (614 or 740)740 965 9970 anytime.
Just call me if I can help with the situation. Sheffeild is good also but most supply houses sell supplies. Do a serch for Bob Engnath on the web . There is a page with lots of basic info on it for some of yopur questions.

My vote for always having stuff in stock goes to Jantz. They haven't backordered anything for me in over two years of dealing with them. For customer service, Texas Knifemaker's Supply is the best. They often attend gun shows, and that is a great time to get Jim to answer all those questions. I also agree that Bob Engnath's old catalogs were great sources of info. Finally, Loveless's book of knifemaking is a lot of help for the beginner. You have to do a little work to find the info. you need - it won't drop in your lap. Above all, get busy and build something since that is the best way to learn!

I use Jantz,Sheffields, Texas Knifemakers and K&G most of the time. Great service and helpful on the phone. I have use Koval but usely buy from them at the shows.
