Ok, so got mine earlier this week, wanted to put some pics put and get people talking about them. I have not been able to put them to work yet, so pics and a general out of the box impression will have to do. Jeff H got a couple as well and I'm sure will be chiming in here soon.

Out of the box I have to say I really like these little guys. Thin, but rugged and very sharp. The shorter one will make a sweet necker. They have a really nice shape and feel good in the hand. The bottom lashing grooves do poke my palm when holding them w/o a cord wrap or handle of any kind, which is a bit uncomfortable, but easily fixed with cord. Both are definitely handy knives, perfect for a kit.

Jeff H and I threw a few ideas around:

*Works very well as a ferro rod striker, both of us tried to use it as a flint striker but that did not work, plus the lashing grooves got in the way.

*Jeff was thinking of maybe laminating two pieces of kydex to make some handles out of using the chicago screw holes

*I was thinking of using somewhat thin wood w/ chicago screws. Easily removable and used as tinder or kindling. Fatwood came to mind.

I had some cord lengths laying around and wanted to feel them wrapped up, the cord just was not long enough, but very comfortable.

dang it, meant to upload those larger. If you guys want the full size pics tell me and I'll resize them and put them up.

that larger one looks great bro. if it had some nice dark curly maple or birch scales it'd look real sweet. update us on how they hold up :)

cheers

Here are the PM's between Jeff H and myself throwing ideas around.

Yeah, I had "ulterior motives" when I signed on.
My idea was more of a "PSK"/fire-making thing. Keeping at least one "groove" for a firesteel and the rest smooth. It would be nice to be able to use the spine as a flint striker. I tried that but the "nubs" get in the way and I did not throw a spark. The edge is way too obtuse for a real cutter and that's fine for a makeshift spear but makes it difficult to shave fuzzies. A higher grind and/or 3/32" thickness would make "carving" tasks easier on the hand, especially with the non-ergonomic handle. That strays fromhis original intent, but perhaps we could get him to do a spin-off product that would even be easier to make. A basic PSK-type piece of decent steel with good HT and these dimensions would be sweet. I also found that I lilked his clip point better than the spearpoint (unusual for me) and I would rather have the shorter blade on the longer handle. Too big a "PSK" tempts one to do bigger cuttingtasks than the thin handles make practical. So, will your "wood scales" be made of fatwood?

I too do not believe I will be lashing it to anything so I think maybe the same design with a smooth bottom w/o the lashing grooves would be cool. Or maybe no lashing grooves, instead put some very tiny firesteel striker grooves like on a firesteel striker. Not that you couldn't use the blade for that. I was also thinking of combining a sheat with a firesteel loop or piggyback style sheat with the steel and knife.... yeah a really cool design Christof has come up with.

I like the laminated kydex handle idea... keep me up to date with that one I was maybe going to get some chicago screws and play around with a thicker wood handle, that way it is removeable and you have some wood for tinder/kindling.

I got mine too and I like them too. They need some "de-horning" before they can be used too much but I think these will meake great, affordable and "mod'able" little blades. I have been mulling the Kydex thing over and - first thing, they would HAVE to be de-burred or they would eat your sheath. I will have to play around and see what will work. Maybe they should have a 1/4" firesteel loop? Not sure yet. They are definitely fascinating little blades though and I may ask him to make me one without the grooves. I am not sure I would ver lash it to a pole, actually, so I would like to try one smooth too. Yeah, I though about thin scales too. Not sure it will work but I am thinking of trying .093" Kydex scales held on with Chicago screws. Not sure it would even be enough to do any goood though but I can laminate two layers and have a 1/2" thick handle when done??

OK, better get moving or I will fall asleep or something worse. One of us is going t o have to start a thread, or start posting our "findings" on Koyote's thread. I HOPE to mess with these this weekend.

Ok, I can't stand tiny pictures, so here are a few the way the should be.

looking at the larger photos, the bigger knife definetly looks fantastic, although im not too partial to that small one.

some ironwood or ebony scales would make that knife one heckuva bushy, hiker.

I don't have either of those, but I do have some Ipe which I think would make good handles, nice and strong wood that should hold up well being thin.

Me too! As soon as I have more time I'm going to do it, my schedule keeps filling up at work, damn it.... don't they know I have some knife tinkering to do!

great stuff... i have a few of these coming my way... i'm looking forwrad to getting em'..:D
