Krein reground knives

Boy, this is an old thread! Here are a few pics of some of my more recent ones.

Benchmade 760, it had the Tanto removed and was hollow ground to .012"

Spyderco Pacific Salt reground to FFG and a .010" edge with a splinter picker tip and an Endura Wave SE taken to a FFG:

My Police 3 taken to a .010" edge with a splinter picker tip:

My Caly Jr with .005" edge:

And a Barong (this isn't mine, but is ground like Tom did mine except mine has a bit more of the edge sharpened, as the grind goes all the way behing the opening hole). Tom added tons of sharpened edge space while leaving room for a forward finger choil, very thin edge, and added thumb ramp along with spine swedges. This knife is GREAT now, as compared to the original in these pics:

Tom does incredible work. I have a busse Leaner Meaner and a Bud Nealy that he worked on, and both are exceptional slicers. I just sent him a box of knives... wish I'd thought to take before pix...

What I enjoy almost as much as his work is his ethos. You know you're in good hands when you deal with him. I agree that everyone should have at least one knife from him, if only to see what "sharp" really is.

Way to bump a 2 year old thread. :p

but Tom does do great work. :)

Mike that BM Lum looks really nice.

Thanks, Tom did a great job with that one. It probably lost a 1/2 ounce of steel, as that thing went from a pig that cut like crap to a real HD cutter that outcuts a lot of gents knives. Now the M4 in the knife can finally shine. The factory bevel was about 35 degrees per side, and after I cut up some boxes to dull down Tom's sharp ass edge I touched it up on the sharpmaker at 15 per side. 2 minutes later I had that thing tree topping hair (and probably whittling hair, but I didn't try) and had to laugh that it took me a long ass time just to rebevel the factory grind to 15 per side on my DMT XX Coarse, and it may have taken a couple weeks to do the same job with the sharpmaker. Tom just transforms knives like you can't believe.

Speaking of Tom transforming knives, if you like great cutting large knives that have wonderful ergos and are light and quick in the hand get Tom's version of the Barong. This is how it should have been ground from the factory. That knife is incredible with how Tom ground it, where I wouldn't have even considered buying the factory version. I only wish it was in ZDP-189, but VG-10 ain't bad and the Calypso like blade cuts like hell. The pictures don't give you the sense that that is a 4" bladed knife, and it carries small, too. I just love my Kreined Barong.

Hey Gunmike1,

What's the edge like on his ultimate caper? I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on one, and was wondering... You and my Spyderco Mule have my interest in CPM M4....

Thanks!

The edge on my Ultimate Caper is .007", as I asked Tom to take it extra thin to take advantage of the M4. It is the sharpest knife I have in the house now, and gets sharper than anything else I own rather easy. I highly recommend it, or also the Hydra if you need more of a short, wide slicing blade. I have that one in CPM D2 and it is the perfect companion for the nice and pointy Ultimate Caper. On my next hunt I will bring both knives along, though either by itself could easily process an animal with their full height hollow grinds. It is just nice to have the UC for pointy work and the Hydra for pure slice cuts where you don't want a point tearing up your meat if you get ham fisted. As good as Tom's regrinds are his customs are just sublime. I highly recommend Blue/Black G-10 as well, it is just so vivid in the color and contrast.

I was thinking of the Hydra, but will probably stick with the UC for now. I have some regrinds as well, and enough wider Doziers to back up the UC. But I'll keep it in mind for the future, thanks for the advice!

All very sweet blades. I have a CQC-7 BW that I am interested in sending to Tom. What do you do, send the knife in a box with a note that reads "give it the treatment"? Send him an email or what?

Give Tom a call on his cell (the number is on his web site) and discuss it with him. After you guys come up with a plan on what you want done on your blade write it down on a note that you put in the box. You can also e mail or PM Tom, but calling is the best way to reach him.

Gotta add a few more shots. He does some good work.
