Kris wins 3000+ Post Giveaway! Thank you, Mike!

Jake,

This is a great giveaway, with a nice twist on choosing the winner. While "kittens" may still prove to be the most random of randomizers, you've certainly made this interesting!

That said, this post is not an entry. For me, the hardest part of conducting my giveaway (just one so far) was having to choose just one winner! Even though (in my case) The Kittens did the job, I was aware that each numbered marble represented someone hopin', and that all but one would not, in fact, win the knife in question. Argh.

In the future, should you decide that the person whose entry you choose gets to pick the person whose entry wins them the opportunity to select a winner from the entries, and so forth, and as long as I'm not the *last* person before the "... And the winner is:" conclusion, I'll be in. ;)

(Who has another giveaway idea percolating, and will choose One winner when the time comes, but will undoubtedly want to give a knife to all the entrants.)

I thought I'd take a picture of some knives and a wheel gun my dad gave me. If I remember right, he bought the two Bucks in 1967 and the single six was given to him by his father. These were part of his mountain lion hunting kit for many years. Even though they aren't Bose knives, the are some of my favorite possessions. Jake, great idea for a giveaway.

Few more days? I'll join in, then!

As for my story...

About a month ago I bought a used Esee-5. Or rather, I bought the old Rat Cutlery version. Either way, it's Esee's short but quarter inch thick knife. After playing around with it at home, I was dying to see how it would perform in the field. About two weeks later, I got my chance. My family takes a yearly trip to a local family owned & operated camp site, and I figured I could have some fun with my new blade. I batoned some wood, made some feathersticks, etc. But then we took a hiking trip up the old trail we've always used. This year, my dad and I decided we should see where one section of trail went, since no one we knew had ever gone up it before.

Fast forward 30 minutes, and the two of us are staring at a fallen tree that is blocking the trail in question. Not wanting to give up, I smiled as I pulled out my knife. It was a smaller leafy tree, and still quite green, so it didn't take much to chop some larger branches off and make a path around the edge of it. I figured we had just cleared a trail and done a good deed, when I looked ahead and realized why the tree had been left there. It was at a fork in the trail, and the camp owners had cleared up to it. But what they had cleared was nothing compared to what I saw in front of me. Evidently an ice storm the previous winter had wreaked havoc on this forest. Over the next hour, we progressed maybe half a mile. I chopped through at least 40 small trees that were blocking the trail in some way or another, and we jumped over at least a dozen huge evergreens.

My knife and I were finally defeated by a narrow gorge that looked like a filled logging truck had spilled into it. There were at least a dozen whole trees that had fallen down the steep sides and piled themselves along the trail, making forward progress impossible without a chainsaw.

We decided, rather than finding a way around, we had best just head back down the trail and tell our story.

Later that day, we asked the camp owners if we could come back with chainsaws and do a better job clearing the trail. "Nope," they said. "That's a back way up, and we want it blocked so non-campers don't hike down and wander around our campsite."

All that work, and apparently they didn't want it done...

At least I got a good story out of it, though.

And the knife? Still sharp, and none the worse for wear. :D

P, are you getting catty with me? :p

Nice knives and gun, Ben. The 301 is one my favorites. I like the new ones also but I sometimes use the first model that Schrade made for Buck.

Made me chuckle, Greese. I could have used your help last spring when a storm downed a bunch of trees, blocking the trail that I take with the dogs.

Alrighty, a random number generator picked sweet sixteen, mike Berkovitch. Mike could you please pick the winning entry? Also, please send me your address in a PM. I have a little something for you also --I think you'll like it.

Congrats Mike on 'winning' the chance to make everybody but the 'winner' mad at you;)

Great twist on the giveaway, and I was very interested in everybodies stories and pictures! Thanks for hosting this.

OK that was not easy to decide how should I pick the winner. I thought to combine my personal prefference with some luck, so I read all the posts carefully, and than once more and picked the 5 posts that I liked most. It was Duncan, Kris, Doug, Robert and Grease, each one of you touched me weather it was the story or the photo or both. Then I wrote down the names and let my 12 yo daughter to pick one name out of my hat. THE WINNER IS KRIS ! Good luck, also from my daughter :)
It was differet GA and I had fun picking the winner. Thanks Jake it is great knife to give away.
Mike

Congratz Kris for winning this great knife! :)

Mike, I think, you (or your daughter) made a good decision.

Thank you for this ununsual GA, Jake. Nice idea :)

Thanks for the congrats all! It was a very pleasant surprise to end my day! I'll try to payback the giveaway shortly! I have the plan, just waiting a bit! The generosity on BF has no bounds some days!

Woo hoo for me!!

Just awesome....went to a real nice guy-well done my friend!!, and Mike..thank you for even considering me when there are so many great guys here- like the one who held this contest!
Have a great night!

I received the knife yesterday and after a bad day at work, almost getting into 3 accidents in two intersections and general grumpy mood this was a great surprise to improve my day. I carried it today but did not find an opportunity to use it, but look forward to putting it through its paces. It appears to be a great knife for a survival kit IMO.

Thank you very much for the great show of generosity!!

Kris, You're very welcome. I'm happy to hear that you are enjoying the knife. I'm sorry that the post office was so slow. I wonder if the knife got stuck in customs since I sent Mike a knife at the same time and the delivery time was much faster even though it had a greater distance to travel.

Very cool give away there Jake my friend...just great!, and Kris...you'll have to treat us to some "in action shots " buddy-that would be good to see... thats a fantastic knife you have there-Im glad it got to you nice and safe!
