Does anyone know anything about the kryptoglow handles on ebay?
i think the lime green would look very cool on the bk7.

I think spongy would be good on a chopper.
Admittedly I'm not familiar with kryptoglow, but I wrap my choppers in paracord to soften the impact. Though I will admit there can be too soft.

I have 2 sets, 1 for my 7 and 1 for my 9. They are hard, not spongy, and they are solid - shaped more like a micarta slab vs. girvory handle. I like em, the one caveat is they are a little too smooth.

I've been lusting after these slabs for a while. They make a camo version of the glow scales for the ESEE line. I'm hoping they will make them for Beckers too.

they're interesting, but they appear to be molded copies of Ethan's handles - a bit too exact if you take my meaning.

will wait until Ethan begs KaBar for proper lime green handles :>

I don't see a problem with that....

you can't easily legally protect a knife design, but you can a feature, esp handles. they're typically trademarked/etc.

bolt hole compatible is one thing, SIMILAR is one thing, but the EXACT shape? shaky grounds.

Mine are arctic blue, they absorb shock as you'd expect a solid mass of plastic would.. not great, not horrible. As for molded copies, I don't believe the ones I purchased are exactly alike, they seem more narrow/shallow, I'll check again tonight.

I've been looking for some krypto lines for my BK 11 but can't find any anywheres. Can't even find a sheet to buy. I tend to avoid eBay if I can and that's the only place I've found them. Any ideas?

Steve

I don't think at this point in time it's even legally possible to prevent someone from selling exact replicas of the Becker knife grips as long as they are intended to be used on Becker knives.

In order to protect a design it must be currently protected by a design patent, registered as a trademark or Copywritten as an Artistic design. Public notices (patent numbers, trademark and /or copywrite symbols) must be made on the product and sales literature.

To my knowledge , none of those things have been done with the Becker handle design at all. Legally in terms of public usage of the design, that horse left the barn years ago. It's the reason why several folks are selling exact replicas of them right now.

If the grip design had been adapted to a competitor's knife line, then KABAR would no doubt try to protect it (or at least threaten to). But since they are basically being made as accessories for real Beckers (which, in the end helps Kabar sell more knives) I don't see how they would be upset.

As a Becker owner, I would much rather have exact replicas of Ethan's grip designs than some of the poorly done home wood shop "sort of Becker" grips I see a few guys sell on that popular Auction sight.;)

If they are molded using the factory grips as a pattern they are going to be a few percentage points smaller due to the shrinkage of both the mold material used to copy the originals and the shrinkage of the material used to cast the grips in the new mold.

I have googled kryptoglow plastic, krypto scales, krypto liners/spacers, glowing plastic and so on.

I cannot figure out where kryptoglow is made or its real name (if its different).

I think its ridiculous to pay $40.00 for some krypto liners on eBay.

I'm not even sure if its molded plastic or some type of paint.

Any one know or have any info?

Thanks,
Steve

It could be some kind of translucent plastic molded with some mixture of glow powder in it. Some of the available colors are very similar to whats sold on Glow Inc or similar websites. As long as the powder isn't soluble in the plastic/resin it would be no different than adding a dye. I can't imagine the process is much different than using that powder mixed into epoxy to add glow on Ghost Jade g-10. I've never done this, so take that with a grain of salt, but I have contemplated getting some of the powder to experiment with. Cash is a little short at the moment though.

I do know that the stuff used on the Manix is an acrylic which can be purchased in a blank , but it's not cheap compared with other synthetic scale materials , to the point where you're probably better off paying for the premade scales on ebay and it only comes in the color I've seen on the Manix. It's also described as being difficult to work with.

I would definitely be interested to hear from anyone who has worked with the powder. I have a big old E-nep I bought from Aranyik for 20 bucks that I've been cleaning up the grind and edges on and wouldn't mind putting some glow grips on, but I'd definitely have to fabricate them from something.

They are awesome! I like the feel alot more than factory scales. I got some for my ESEE 3 and they were worth every penny. They are soft but very firm. Kind of like carpet on top of a concrete floor.

The kryptoglow would look great on a BK-7.

You mean like this?
