Kubey seems to have come a long way in meeting solid knife and steel standards.

Is their reputation growing among those that own a lot of knives?

I took a chance on two models lately and they seem to be producing very good products (for the money). I don't mean just cheap.

Experience and comments?

Have four models. All good build and take a good edge. Two changed names/brands; two nice flippers in D2; one now an Albatross brand, the other a Geo brand. Both actually Kubey models. I carry one around house as second to my EDC SAK Tinker- most Kubey flippers are ball bearing pivots and work well IMHO.

Actually Kubey are pretty fair. Not your usual Chinese knock-offs. Best knives in world? NO, but reasonable users. Seems some of the Guangdong knives change their brand name monthly ;) Yes, you get what you pay for, a good usable $20-$30 knife for $20-$30; sort of in same class as Rough Ryders but some better steels (but not always).

Yes, good knives. It's nice to know you don't have to sell a kidney or have the latest SVQN9786x superexpialidous steel to have a good knife.
Lots of makers/companies of reasonably priced knives with good steel out there.

Rich,
99.9% of knives that exist regardless of where they are made are "reasonable users". And exactly, you get what you pay for. Having been into knives for over 40 years, forgive me if I don't get excited by a Knife company that has a 6 year old history.
There are, especially in the past year 2020, huge political and humanitarian reasons why I won't support such a brand but that's outside the posting rules.
Enjoy.

I understand where you are coming from. I've been into knives for about 70 years. I've been around the block several times. I've seen companies/brands come and go. Knew the Baer brothers and visited with Albert many times. Cried when Imperial Schrade went under and then when Queen died. Seen several good new brands and old brands revamped. The knife world has undergone many changes over the last couple centuries. England and Germany companies basically died when US took over the world market; several US companies lost out to Japan; Japan and US seem to be loosing out to China. None the less, lots of good brands still made everywhere and many new brands coming on the scene. Just because it's new or old doesn't mean good or bad products. I respect your point of view even though I may disagree with some of it.

Looking at Kubey's catalog, I see at least two designs "heavily inspired by" Olamic knives (Rainmaker and Swish). A quick Google search turns up an older Kubey-branded Rat clone, although I don't see it in their line-up.

That's enough for me to avoid them.

Buy or not - that's your preference. BTW, some Rats are Japanese made.
Every maker has copied others designs since the beginning of time.
Did Case design the first barlow or congress pattterns?

First heard of Kubey reading this thread yesterday. Actually saw a few at a gun-show today. Not bad quality, and the fixed blade in AUS-10 was ALMOST enough to get me to bite....

Which ones? As far as I am aware all RAT folders are made in Taiwan and the fixed in USA.

This is the one I want but it's been discontinued.

If anyone sees one let me know.

My profile pic here is an older Kubey. I've had some of their other models with wood scales and D2. They are nice for what they are: pretty wood scales, caged bearings, and decent steel for the money. That's a big part of it. This kind of quality really shines under $30. They're not incredible by any stretch. They're just good for what they are.

As far as their G-10 knives, I've had mixed experiences. Some of it has been design or ergonomic issues. I'm also not sure about their AUS-10. I know factory edges aren't a good indicator of overall performance but I still expect "okay" performance from a factory edge. Both of the AUS-10 knives I tried were uncomfortable in hand and their factory edges mashed up in a hurry against cardboard. (They've been sitting in a drawer ever since.) OTOH, I do have a more recent D2 fixed blade from Kubey that's been decent.

I haven't tried any of their premium stuff.

So is it a lifetime warranty or lifetime warranty for 30 days?

RETURNS & REPLACEMENTS

Kubey provides a lifetime guarantee against defects in materials and craftsmanship. We promise that if the product has defects or quality issues within 30 days of shopping, we support returns or free replacements. What needs to be excluded is that the product is damaged by human factors, which is not in the warranty or replacement scope. If you have any questions about your shopping, please feel free to contact us, we will reply to you ASAP.

I have seen this brand for sale, mostly on Amazon.

I have never had the desire to purchase one. They seem kinda sterile and forced. Not sure about the warranty either.

A Buck 110, Opinel 9, SAK, Ontario Rat 1 or Utilitac, Morakniv, Kershaw Link, Case Trapper, CS SRK in SK5, Spyderco Delica on the exchange are all available for under 50 bucks.
