Spoke to Pala a couple of evenings back and got some very good news from him. According to Nepali government statistics BirGorkha is Nepal's leading exporter of khukuris and considered a valuable asset to to Nepal's economy -- 5 star rated.
Addditionally, the owner and manager of old shop 1, T. B. Bishwakarma, came to visit Pala and asked if we could not throw some work his way. But he still has that old Nepali mindset which was so difficult to overcome and said, "I can produce the khukuris for 1/3 of what it is costing you to produce them at BirGorkha." Materials cost about the same so it is the kamis who are making up the difference and that's what we are NOT going to do. And the gossip in the khukuri world according to TB is that all khukuri makers and sellers acknowledge that we opened the door for others -- started as number one and continue to be number one.
We are not going to replace the World Bank but it's good to know that we are making some difference.
I knew we were doing a few things right but this news came as a big surprise and I'm happy to share it with all forumites who are partially responsible for the success story.
