Kudos for HI and BirGorkha. Not bragging but I'm flabbergasted.

Great News Uncle Bill.

I believe that most people try to do good things when they can but it's usually for the people in their close knit little world.

For someone to help a people, in a profound and meaningful way, on the other side of the planet. That IS something to be proud of.

I've only bought (3) khukuris - so far! but I plan on buying many more and do my small part in supporting them.

Well Done!!!

Congrats on making the list,

I think you have focused on the good things that free trade can
do for people. We get great knives and are happy to pay for them and they get an industry. It doesn't get much better.

I'm one of those fellows who somtimes see other possiblilies.
I have been thinking, There are other products that were hand forged
years ago and it's just not done anymore. I understand that
the english are fond of hand forged gardening tools. Most the stuff at home depot is affordable, but hardly professional grade and they don't have
a lot of personality.

I read a book about small business and the author made a living selling
english hand made gardening tool in the states.

Considering the basic skills that have a been mastered in the factory,
It shouldn't be such a huge leap. All a matter of finding the people interested and the right blend of product features.

I also think that forrestry tools may hold a possible market for hand forging skills. I'm talking about pulaski's( a combination hoe and axe) . I remember a few years ago that our mtn bike organizantion had some trouble aquiring some as one of the major manufacturers had stopped making them.

In either case a custom I sure there would be a market for special presentation models ( as awards) with that special nepal flair( polished, engraved , what ever) You just can get stuff like that that made here anymore.

If the same Hi standards are applied, I think sales and employement could be increased.

here's a project-

With all the interest in "primitive" bladesmithing out there, how about a video/DVD of how the khukuris are made, filmed on site? A little background info on Nepal, and what good HI is doing there too. Who knows, maybe the history channel or somebody might even show it!

Also, for the do it yourselfers, how about selling semi finished blades? Or perhaps starting with a 15" AK villager "kit". Buyer gets the parts, and does assembly and polsishing...

Just some ideas!

Tom

That's excellent news, Uncle Bill:) I'm so proud to be part of something so great that helps so many people that need it so much. Wonderful work, Uncle Bill et al. and thank you:)

Indeed a well justified "warm fuzzy feeling". Good news to be sure. Keep it up and don't give in to the others.

Congrats. You should be proud of all that you have done for everyone, both in Nepal and around the world.

Rusty, I got the message and am sorry I missed you. I was doctoring yesterday -- spent almost 3 hours down at GI Consultants. But news was generally good -- cancer ruled out 100% but now what to do with 2 inch tumor? I want to burn it out with tomotherpy but Doc Reddy wants to let it alone and observe. I'll get another opinion from Dr. Binmoellar over at calpacmedctr on the 28th.

Bottom line is I want to feel decent again and I don't most of the time.

Great news Uncle Bill. I too knew that HI did great things for the kamis and their families, but I guess I didn't realize the extent of the impact. Cool to hear. :)

It's great to be part of helping the poorest of the poor. Thanks Uncle for getting Birgorka started.!!

Then waited 2 1/2 hours for them to install a new AM/FM/CD receiver in place of the old shot-to-heck AM/FM/Cassette Player. Anyway, it works, I just need to learn how to use it - only now I use bifocals.
Little Bro, in about five years or so it will be trifocals.:p
That's when I had to get 'em anyway. Need to have a new prescription made pretty soon. My glasses are getting shot again and it's harder and harder to read small print like on the bfc forums.
Finally figured out where to go to reset the web pages so that windows ignores what's on the web pages.
Now my mouse scroller works again and I have the light blue background with dark blue print and a maroon for threads I've read!!!!:D

Congratulations Bill!:D That's quite an accomplishment for anyone!

I'm fer getting back the convex edges as well Doc.

Hang in Bill! It will get better with time.
