Kudos to Bark River

So far I've liked every Bark River knife I've had- haven't kept them all because there was a lot of overlap with so many models. They were all very sharp and a lot of knife for the price. A while back I picked up a used NorthStar with curly maple scales which had shrunk just enough that you could feel the ridge of the spine- not a big deal and I used the knife with no problems. The blade had also gotten some scratches from some grit getting into the kydex sheath- again, no problem.

One day I called Bark River to order some stropping compound and in the course of the conversation I asked the guy what he would recommend doing about the scales and he said to send it in and he would take care of it. That's actually when I found out who I was talking to, because I wanted to put it to his attention when I sent it in- it turns out I had been talking to Mike Stewart! It was after hours, he was still in the shop and had casually taken my order for a whopping $10 or whatever and had a nice chat about some of the different models, Coke vs. Pepsi, ... ;) Just a nice down-to-earth guy.

Anyway, I got the knife back yesterday- keep in mind, he knew I had bought the knife used. I thought they would just grind the edges of the scales down flush with the spine and maybe sharpen it. I couldn't believe it when I looked at the knife- the blade looked like new, the scales definitely were new (and the wood is gorgeous!) the mosaic pins are nicer than the originals, and they even included the new style sheath (I told you this was a used knife)!

I know they didn't do this because they lost my knife because it came back in the same box. They already had me as a customer because I like their knives, but I just couldn't let this kind of OUTSTANDING customer service go unrecognized- talk about above and beyond! It's really great to see a successful company that still values it's customers like this.:thumbup::thumbup::D

Good service like that should be recognized. . . thank you for the heads up. Gonna have to get me a Barkie before long.

That is some impressive service, MVF. I have three Bark Rivers. They are great knives. It's good to know Mike stands behind his knives.

When Mike says they stand behind their knives, he means it. You just won't find a better person to deal with.:thumbup:

Good to hear! I had to send in 2 new knives as the edge was sub par and so far everything has been great dealing with them. I look forward to getting them back.
Won't be my last one most likely.

THAT'S a Business man!! Thanks, Mike and thanks for your post! I love my Woodland SPL.

I had a similar experience when I returned my Fox River for some handle work. When it came back, I could not determine if it was my old knife or a new replacement.

That's good to hear. Mike is a good old boy all right. I'm gonna get me a Bravo 1 one of these days, come hell or high water!

Good story MVF. I have one that's similar:

I have a Highland Special with impala scales. As you may know, they don;t pin their impala scaled knives, probably because of the texture of the horn. One day, I was hacking away at a piece of mesquite and one of the scales came loose... unglued. The only thing holding it on was the lanyard hole pin - it would swivel and pivot on it, but not pull away. Previously, I had worked hard to put a nice patina on the blade.

So, I called BRKT and spoke to a young lady. I sent it in (to their strange address) and waited. I sent a letter in with the knife, telling BRKT that they really should pin their impala scales (but I didn;t ask that mine be pinned). It took almost two weeks, but when it returned, the scales had hollow pins in them. The blade was polished like it was brand new, and the edge was probably sharper than when I received it new-in-box!

I'm very impressed with Bark River knives and their company ethics.

Since pictures are always a nice addition to a post, here are a couple of three ((( :D )))

Bark River and Mike Stewart = amazing knives, great guy. He is donating 10 Bark River knives to our CT Wilderness Gathering for everyone to try out, then we will give the knives to participants as prizes. We didn't ask him -- he called and asked us where he could send them!!!

Brian Jones, welcome to the brotherhood!

Mike is a GREAT guy, he even hugged me once!

Thank you thank you! It is a pleasure and an honor. Marty Simon sent me a Fox River with his school logo on it. It has absolutely blown me away.

2 Barkies for me: a stunning Buckeye Burl Northstar with mosaic pins as my primary fixed blade, and a beautiful Southern Skinner in red micarta. I won the Southern Skinner in one of Mike's giveaways a few years ago.

Saving up for a Micro Canadian at some point. Great knives, and I love the convex grind.

I'v been considering buying a Bark River, this post may make my decision easier. I was thinking fo maybe a North star, for EDC. Iwant something a little on the small side, but not too small. Any suggestions?

Here's a size comparison:
From top to bottom: Bravo-1, Northstar, Highland Special, mini-Northstar, 2 - mini-Skinners, and a mini-Canadian.
