FortyTwoBlades had a 1000-post giveaway for a NIB Dovo straight razor.

The razor showed up last night in my mailbox, and I got to handle a straightrazor for the first time in my life. It was truly NIB, and the seal on the box wasn't even broken--I expected it to at least have been looked at.

The shaving soap and brush have also arrived, the strop will be in stock and shipped next week, and after that you can start calling me "Mr. Nicks" for a while, but hopefully not for too long as I come up to speed on shaving with a blade. I'm committed to learning how to shave proficiently with this razor, a useful, old-world skill to have.

Thanks again for your generous gift, FortyTwoBlades! I appreciate it. And what other forum can you expect to be thanked for a gift that will inevitably draw blood? Is this a great place or what? :D

Keep that evil thing away from me.. If you slit your throat dont you come complaining to me. My dad has one that is atlist 40 year old. He didnt use it for over 30 years. I cut my self just looking at the box. Evil edge im telling you.

Yes, blades come what is referred to as factory sharp, but they need honing when new and every few months afterwards, plus stropping each day before use. I bought Lynn Abrams DVD "World of Straight Razor Shaving" which is the main resource, and started watching it last night. He teaches a lot about the tools and techniques.

LOL, the Brits don't call them "cut throats" for nothing. Time to ramp down on the aspirin therapy. ;)

Just remember to use a light touch and go easy at first. You already have an advantage in having experience with sharp blades, so you ought to do fine. I've yet to give myself a truly bad cut with one :knock on wood: and at this point I nick myself more using a cartridge blade! Glad it got there safely! :D

I have tried to use my dads blade once. That thing is evil sharp. Im not kidding when i say you can cut your throat open and not not even feel it. I dont remember where i put it but now i got a reason to go and find it. It also comes with its own special sharping stone. If i cut myself again im coming back on here to blame people.
