Kukhuri Availability

I've never warmed up to the katana, I use all kinds of Chinese weapons for play (long and short staffs, spear, kwandao, straight sword, sabres, double sabres, knife).
The Kukhri, OTOH, is a very practical defensive weapon, much less likely to bounce off an opponent, IMO.
On a side note, my petulant prodding finally got me a tracking number for my Kukhri from the other company.
I'll post a review in General when it gets here.
To be honest, I see no reason why The HI Kukhs should not be reviewed in General like any other knife.
The HI forum is a bit off the beaten track for the average reader just perusing the forums, methinks.

I had a unique opportunity to speak to a retired general from the Red Army over in China. He told me a story from long ago, when some Japanase bandits were terrorizing the Chinese mainland. Their katanas were superior to the weaponry that was used in the area at the time, and they appeared unstoppable. Finally a general trained his troops in some simple coordinated maneuvers with polearms, and the coordinated effort was able to defeat the Japanese bandits. I took away many things from our conversation, but one of them was the respect even from enemies, for the katana in trained hands.

I trained with it a bit myself in my college Aikido studies.

I don't think there will be a problem with a HI review in General, especially if the review also has other content.

I could be wrong though. (I should just put that in my sig line.)

Oh, man, I never intended to denigrate it. Dealing with an opponent with trained hands and a katana is a damned good way to lose your own hand (and head!)

heh, now that's funny...

We actually have a Knife Reviews & Testing forum which would be appropriate for that. I always like to see specialized forums get more use, focusing attention on different ways of understanding knives.

The HI forum itself is best for addressing ourselves to HI products as what we ourselves as a community are interested in, but when comparisons with other knives or companies are included, General Knife or Knife Reviews wouldn't be a bad idea at all.

My first khukuri came by ship. I bought it in Nepal in the late '70s and had it shipped home in a parcel with some wooden masks, Tibetan clothing, thangkas, etc. After Nepal I went on to journey in India and Sri Lanka for some months. As I recall it was several months after I was home in the US that the parcel with my khukuri finally found its way to me.

Nowdays the HI stuff travels by air. Yangdu still has problems with rust sometimes, but imagine if there was a 6 month land and sea journey involved.

When I worked for the Postal Service in NYC in the early 1970s, we used to get mail from India and Pakistan on Saturdays. This mail came by ship and was liberally sprayed with pesticides and who-knows-what else. Not only did it stink, but it irritated our lungs and arms and hands -- we were constantly running to the washrooms on breaks to clean it off.

I really, really don't like katanas. People think there's something intrinsically special about the blade, but there's not. It's just a light two hand sword.

What was special was the men using them. They could have used any other light two hand sword and been just as effective.

Even there, those guys preferred the spear and naginata, best to kill your enemy away from you. Once you got through those, then he'd use the katana.

BTW if someone loves them, great for you, they just aren't for me.
