Jens. Im thinking since the doorbell transformer had too much current for the windings and you got oxidized red deposits you may have to solution to salty. Diluting it will reduce the current and maybe get it to blacken. I remember when anodizing if the solution was to strong then your part would actually dissolve because the chemical activity is so great on the surface that the oxides would actually be scrubbed away by this activity instead of depositing.
