Which size of the CS Kukri Machete is better? Obviously the longer one is longer but the shorter one seems to have a more pronounced "belly". I've never heard a bad opinion of the cs kukri machete but I've also never heard anyone express if its the shorter or longer one they prefer. Any help is greatly appreciated.

i personally like the kabar over the cold steel. himalayan imports make the best.

what are you using it for?

Just looking for a good general use machete to round out my collection of tools. After all everyone needs a good machete right? I've decided on the CS kukri machete, i just don't know which size is best.

don't forget there's a two handed version... :jerkit:

I only have used the 12 inch one so I can't voice my opinion. For just a tool to have around the home I'd probably pick the 18 incher. For something to tuck behind a shoulder bag- the 12 incher. preference to what I'm doing.

Of the two go with the Short fatter one.
I have 5 CS machetes, 12" Barong, 18" Barong, 12" Bowie, 18" Latin and the Magnum Kukri.
The Mag Kukri is the least comfortable/useful.
Warning-The ergos on the long Mag Kukri grip are awful, i have medium/small hands and the grip size is too small. I'm probably just going to re-handle mine eventually.
The grip on the other CS are ok though.
Personally if i had to just pick one machete i'd go with the Bolo style, the Tramontina Bolos can be hand for under $10. Also the Imcasas and Condors are very nice. The Marbles are nice too, but they are actually relabeled Imcasas.
The Marbles Bolo i have came hair-shaving sharp, even the top edge could shave hair!
You should just check out machete specialists and see what they have available there.
I have almost 20 machetes but i'm not an expert on them.
Hopefully Joezilla will pop in here and comment, he's the real-deal Machete guru!
:)

okay im confused, are you looking for a machete or a kukri?

Machete, i just like the kukri style machete of cold steel. I also looked at both the condor golok and parang, but the cost of CS is so much more attractive, especially when the sheaths for the condor are another $25 extra.

I've also been meaning to try the Magnum model, but haven't yet. I own the 13" model and love it; for a general use machete I would highly recommend it. The Magnum model kind of reminds me a little of the Becker Patrol Machete. Excellent outdoors/survival machete, but not really a Jack-of-all-trades. My concern on the longer model is that been 4 inches longer but only 2 oz. heavier, and with a shorter, less pronounced sweet spot, the Magnum model sacrifices chopping potential for a more stylized look. I would recommend that you go with the shorter model for now, and after you get the hang on using a kukri, and like it, then consider trying the magnum model.

The 13" model is a really tough little machete, but be prepared to re-sharpen or re-profile the factory edge. CS still has to work a little in that area of quality control. Being a Kukri you expect it to be a dedicated chopper, but the CS kukri machete's thin profile allows it to do all the traditional tasks you expect of a machete. I was raised in Puerto Rico and for part of my youth we didn't have a loan-mower, so I mowed the front and back yards with a machete, which were also required tools for camping and hunting trips. Point been that I think I know a little about what you can do with a machete, and the only thing I can think of this Kukri machete wouldn't do as well as a traditional machete is to serve as a drawknife.

The Knife Tests CS Kurki Machete destruction videos will show you how tough this machete really is; how much abuse it can take before catastrophic failure occurs. And it turns out this machete laughs at abuse. You'll find the videos in the site's second page.

I own the CS kukri machete, the Kabar kukri machete, and the HI Foxy Folly. Each one is an excellent all-purpose tool, but with different primary tasks in mind. IMO the CS is an excellent machete that makes for a good chopper, while the Kabar is an excellent chopper that makes for a good machete. HI products are in a different league all together.

I have used both. They came with sloppy grinds, but then they are way less expensive than the CS Gurkha kukris. For slashing vegetation, the longer one is better. Once properly sharpened, either one works fine for chopping. The sheaths are a bit cheezy, but for the money the CS Kukri machetes work fine.

I have the CS one and I can say that it is my go to machete when I need a tough blade for a tough job. I have various others from Tramatina that I use more because they are so lite. You can't go wrong either one of the these brands.

Yeah really choose any of the above other than the CS Magnum Kukri, grip ergos are bad and it feels lighter flimsier than the other CS machetes.
Maybe with a rehandling that will improve but if i was you i'd go with the shorter fatter one or a Condor/Imcasa/Tramontina Bolo.
Even my little modded 13" tramontina beats the snot out of the magnum kukri.

I own and have used both. I prefer the smaller version. The whole point of a kukri shaped machete is the cutting power of the "belly" and the forward weight distribution. The longer version that stretches and thins out the belly would be better replaced with a standard machete.

After I put a good working edge on the kukri machete it does perform well for the price. Definitely be prepared to do some major edge work to get the grind even. Odds are, you will get one that is pretty far off unless you can buy in person and inspect the edge before you buy.

I hope my on topic reply helps with your quest. :D

i love my Condor Golok..well worth the money.

if you look hard enough you can find one of the best production machetes ever.
its made by becker and called the BK6. its a beast 1/4 inch thick and a 14inch blade. it will clear anything you want (and it has an organic recurve:thumbup:)

the CS models aren't all that great in my opinion. spend a little more and you'll thank my later.

the Ontario military issue is another great option if you want a traditional machete.
my father bought one in the 70's when he was in the service and i used it just yesterday.
still kickin' and cuttin'
