Kukri or combat knife

This is the exact reason I don't carry a gun. Carrying a large weapon is simply a false sense of pride. You will be more likely to engage while carrying one of these large weapons which means you will also be more likely to get seriously injured. Living a life constantly fearing an attack just doesn't seem like an enloyable one. Take a chill pill, mind your own business, and more than likely you will never have one of these fantasy encounters. And you say you are worried about your bike or some cars paint? B.s. you are worried about your pride and thats all there is to it. There isn't a single material object I would put over my health and safety.
I'm sorry for the speel. I'm usualy good about minding my own business, but I just couldn't hold my toung any longer. It is violent intent like this that gives my passion a bad name, and subsoquently harsher knife laws.
Okay I'm done now.

I read through your criteria and frankly, I think you should be looking for something WAY SMALLER...parrying a crowbar or pipe is pretty crazy, sorry if that sounds condescending

I'd recommend something like the Spyderco Matriarch with the Emerson wave for what you're describing

But like someone else said a gun is always, always the best option

Pedal like hell, the parrying you imagine is not going to happen and they will take your fancy knife away. After they beat you up.

I carry a machete in my car. It's useful for that road rage scenario where somebody thinks they're all tough but then realizes they don't want their flesh separated from their bones and walks away. Or at least that's MY street fight fantasy.

Not a knife but if I was facing off with an attacker with a crowbar or anything, I would want tonfas

Much easier to parry or block with your backpack than take out the khukri from your backpack and try to parry with it. If you have time to stop and take out a khukri from your backpack, you have time to run away.

My thoughts exactly. And at least with a blunt object like a baton, police might be a bit more likely to understand, carrying batons themselves (although not sure about Canadian police, but most police at least carry batons and spray.)

As a former bike messenger, you aren't going to have time to pull shit out. Things happen on the road faster than you can fantasize. Get a lock like this and wear it around your hip like a belt. No more problems and you're bike won't get jacked. Try having a gun pulled on you for road rage while on the bike, then you'll see it a little differently.

There is no sure defence other than situational awareness.
Only real speed can hope to counter a sudden direct offensive attack.
I m certain no ordinary person can ever be entirely prepared for the unexpected should it hit.
The need to arm as a means to "counter" any attack
Bares a personal responsibility to which it's use is not without consequence.
I suspect no one ever thinks about how or when it should, or can be put to use, once the shtf.
Once The natural Instinct for self preservation kicks in
The focus narrows down to increasing the odds to ones favour
Though whatever means at that instant of danger, mortal or otherwise.
Any weapon is only as good at the proficiency of its wielder.
Having said that, what possible chance is there to use any weapon
If it is visible to all eyes?
Unfortunately, the only way out of this predicament is concealment.
And this would generally contravene laws.
I figure some folks might take their chances
And do what they feel makes them safer...
The art of creating fear elements of surprise upon an attacker
can turn the cards around for a victim.
But only if the victim is still physically able to put up resistance.

3 pages and no smatchet suggestions?
I am losing faith here.

I agree with nick21's matriarch wave suggestion though for a backup.
